tank smell!!!!!!!! plz help does carbon help smell?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Another thing to consider is it may be a chemical in your water. My fish tank used to smell pretty bad until I started adding tons of plants, and I've noticed as my parameters get closer to 0 it smells less. Also if you have 6 bichirs in a 55 it's most likely overstocked, I'm assuming they arn't near fully grown yet

other then an air stone what do you have to break the surface water. cause I know a film on top of my turtle tank when i was over feeding and had nothing to break the water surface. air stones do help but if a low power air pump it wont do much if there is a large amount of film that was there b4 the air stone went in.

yeah i think its "pellets" i have the same problem....dont know what to do either...

That's really hard to read without any punctuation. Check your parameters, could be waste/left over food smell.

It is true that the pellets can smell, but have you checked your Ammonia levels or have you been using some ammonia removal chemicals? Sometimes when you use ammonia removal is makes the water smell, but also if your ammonia is too high it will smell very badly. Once the tank has a solid cycle going with low to 0 ammonia levels the smell will go away. I bet you anything it is your ammonia, try some crushed coral in your filters..

I agree with FDR, what's your water changes and cleaning sched.

I'm guessing your tank is way overstocked. That's a lot of fish in a 55. Even if they are small now, it will only get worse not better! Smell is probbaly lots of dissolved organics (No3, ammonia?)

Increase water changes (at least 50% once a week), cut back on feeding and get a bigger tank!

PS- would have made more sense (to me) to have posted in disease/health cichlid-forum

I agree with the other posts on doing a water change, clean gravel and, .....maybe cut down on the feeding if there is a lot of fish food left in the tank.

You didn`t mention your cleaning routine.
How often do you change your water?
How often do you clean your gravel?
How often do you change/clean your filter media?
Most tanks will give some odor, but a really strong smell would get me to alter my cleaning schedule.

yup thats gonna be the most important thing imo because carbon wont mean that much unless ur water changes aren't done right. also i would ask how big are ur fish? ur stock could just be overwhelming in a 55 and causing the water to get bad quicker.

largest fish is a 7inch ornate rest are about 4 to 6 inchs i feed very sparingly 2 times a week i feed them till they stop eating i feed massivor and the tank dosnt smell till after i feed or when its around 10 at night night always makes it smell the tank has been set up for around a month fish in it for a week it is super clean visualy and has 2 large power heads and a canister filter with around 650ish gph turn over maybe lil less becuz the power heads are on a gravle filter i asume that puts strain on there flow
i havnt done a gravel clean yet cuz its a gravel filter and only been up for 1 month but i do a water change once a week for 3 weeks 50% but this past week i did 3 25% changes cuz the smell i used prime at first to remove chems from tap water but havnt used it sence a week after i cycled the tank ( for 2 weeks b4 adding fish and used a filter pre run on the 30 gal predicesor) the bb should be good in the tank it was pre run for 2 weeks with a filter used n old tank and when i added fish i put the main pump from old tank with out cleaning it so it had full bb load after the first week running with fish i did a thuro cleaning of filters and started the 50% wc there are alot of carnivor fish in the tank tho tho there size atm dosnt seem to justify the smell and when i add pellets it dose get way worse for a few hours but it comes on so fast and strong should i start feeding hikari floating pellets i think they smell less and are like half the price hahahah
