A protein skimmer won't do anything on a freshwater setup. The "film" on the water is probably because there isn't much surface movement. Most tanks ( fresh, brackish, salt ) get this without the movement. I had this "film" happening on 2 of my tanks. My suggestions are the following.
1 - lose the undergravel filter. They're ancient and junk.
2 - vacuum your gravel really really well. Maybe 1/2 the tank over the next 2 water changes.
3 - Get an HOB filter (for a 55 gal I suggest at least an AC70, but AC110 is better )
4 - Vent the room.
Adding carbon will remove meds, and help clear the water ( tho you said it's clear already ) but not sure what it will do for the smell. This is just my 2 cents. Good luck!
