I would like some opinions on a tankmate for an oscar. I would like a fish that will grow to a length of 10 to 16 inches, that is preditory, but not so aggressive that it will attack the oscar. I appreciate your input.

Ive got a jag, clown knife, arowana, and an albino channel cat with mine. If you have enough room there are a lot of fish that can go with an oscar.

And if you don't have enough room for an aro-size fish, try a few Petenia Splendida Red. They look good, kinda elongated body (shape of a bass) and has a thin body, they grow to similar size as the oscars, just a little longer (16" max i think). They are basket mouths, eat a lot, and predatory...but I have never seen one agressive towards fish that are not feeders...

I have two albino oscars with mine, and they are great tankmates. Zero agressions.

Check out a quick profile here : http://www.gcca.net/fom/Petenia_splendida.htm

peacock bass will grow too large for what hazfish is looking for (judging by the first post anyway). I believe even the smallest peacock bass will grow to around 2 feet in length but could be mistaken.

the red bay snook may be the best option, though a Parachromis loisellei or friedrichsthalli may work as well. these will grow to around 12" and are related to the jaguar, but are most often reported to not be as aggressive as a jag so one may go just fine with a larger oscar.

a severum, uaru, chocolate cichlid, C. pearsei, C. bocourti or synspilum would probably work as well and would fit into the size range you're looking for but none of these are predatory. :)

I have heard a lot of good feedback about keeping oscars with severums and uaru so I agree with Jason. Other possable options are the Jack Dempsey, Texas cichlid, some kind of medium sized geophagus or perhaps even another oscar.

I have to ask though, what size is your tank. That will inevitabley help decide what you can have.

jack dempsey or a green terror
