tankmate for an oscar

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Redhooks, some of the tilapia?
Hiya Hazman, welcome to MFK.
How big a tank and do you want just one tankmate?

I currently have 3 Oscars with a Jack Dempsey in a 200 gal. They've been raised together, and the Oscars kinda half heartedly chase Jack, but no serious fights have broken out. In the past I've had luck with severums. Ideally I'd say the best tankmate for an Oscar is another Oscar.

Piranha, (I don't like oscars).

Electric blue dempsey or red head severum.I would worry about the oscar with more aggressive cichlids

:ROFL: OK Mr. Garrison.....I like oscars WAY more that i like p's though.

I've always wondered how long a redbelly would last in my tank.....I think it would be worth the cost of a RBP to see it get smoked by the aro

//sorry i guess im twisted

Frontosa perhaps.

If you're considering non-cichlid and you have a large enough tank, Sorubim lima.

Chocolate cichlid.

Sorry, it's late and I'm hard pressed to think of any more at the moment.

i keep mine with 4 other oscars and an ornate bichir, gonna add two pbass soon. sen em with silver dollars quite a few times and also with tinfoils.

jack dempsey or a green terror
can be done but risky(for oscar), kind of a bad idea.. IMO .. it could also go both way's, you can have a rare but possible(in my case) an overly aggresive oscar!.. no two fish of the same specie are the same .. my larger ''O''(10'') is hanibal lector with fin's every thing placed with him has been killed , beat to near death and or eaten . this oscar killed ( systematicly) three golden nugget pleco's over nite.. so pretty much it's going to be trial and error. good luck :thumbsup:

i keep my oscars with florida gar, red snook, green terror, and rtc in a 125. good luck
oscars like any fish that grows that large needs a large filter system and plenty of water changes. if they are to be healhy and happy. they can be very messy.
