Tankmates for a green terror?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have kept smaller fish in with mine without issue, but it's going to depend on your fish. I have had good luck with pictus cats, silver dollar types, and parrots overall. I recently put a small parrot in because mine have been picky eating for months, the parrot has actually taught them to come up to the top for food finally - until now they have been waiting for it to sink and refusing pellets.

Hello MFK, new to the site and have help. I am getting a 4" green terror from my friend (lfs sold it to him claiming it a fancy peacock cichlid, the GT has killed one of his peacocks already - had it for a day and a half... sad)
I have a 55gal not being used and i want to know if these fish would be ok together:
1-Green terror
1-Senegal bichir
1- L200 pleco
1- Rapheal catfish
Maybe 2 convicts
Will this overstock my tank?
Will this mix work together? (Not sure about the bichir)
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

GT, L200 and some South American dithers would be a better mix. Raphael is boring, just hides, not worth the bio load. I personally would avoid mixing with fish like convicts and bichirs that are from different ecosystems.

Thank you for your reply, much appreciated.
I like catfish, and was hoping the Raph, but i do understand why. Could you give me some examples of the SA dithers? Ive had a few aggressive fish before, but not like the GT. I want to make him a nice home (its a very pretty fish :)

I think you will find in the confines of a 55 a Gt, especially a male will grow up very territorial of most tank mates.
A male gt will get to a very minimum of 10 inches, probably bigger.
It will dominate a 55 all by itself.

The 55 is being set up to accept the GT now, but i am going to purchase a 150T (60x24x24) from Miracles at xmas time for it and use the 55 for an EBJD set up. I think the 60x24 footprint would make a much nicer environment for the GT, thats why im trying to figure out what would best go with the GT

I like the raphael too, really wanted one. But I decided against it for the reason stated. Do some research here and around the web, it's not a good fish to keep. Pictus cat or similar would be a much better choice because they are active and don't hide much.

Dithers are really up to your taste. Any peaceful schooling/shoaling fish that is too big for the GT to eat yet not too big for the tank would work. Maybe wait for the 150 to find dithers, you will have more options then. For now you could just stick with your GT, L200 (beautiful fish) and maybe a pictus in the 55.

Funny you should mention the pictus, i had been considering setting up this 55 for 4-5 of them and something with them (due to my friend setting up his peacock tank) i think that might just be the plan :) How many pictus could i keep with that GT in the 150? All will be babies now in the 55, but moving to 150 in january after setting up and cycling.
Yes, i would get the pictus at 3 1/2" -4" already just so the GT dont hassle them... much. Lol

I used to keep hoplo catfish with my gt.s.
They are outgoing and peaceful and quite entertaining. They do best in groups.
I also used to keep 4 line pims with no problems.
Another good tank mate for your gt,when you get the bigger tank would be another gt of the opposite sex.
