I have been reading a past thread from 2008 about a couple mfk members trying to tan their fish red from either the nan light to other lights. The OP asked many times if it was possible to get even slight variation of color using this light on a silver aro. His question never got answered... No one ever said no but they acted like he never asked the question. So if anyone knows a good tanning light that would work on a silver to get a little red out of it that would be awsome. I do realize in some peoples eyes this would be considered cheating or harming the fish. I will most certainly not over use the light and I live in florida where only silvers are legal so I wanted to try this.

As far as I know, you can get some orang / red on silver aros by feeding them shrimp with shell and food containing carotene. My previous silver aros were showing pink red on all scale on border when they were 2 feet long

I expect the change in colour from tanning and food would be minimal, but anything will look red with a nan light....

lol thats cheating it just makes it look red but doesnt actually tan the fish. I believe that anything with pigments can be tanned so im trying to find a red tanning light from a legit tanning bed.

Mine got some nice red and orange color to the fins after I started feeding it shrimp. The scales look a grayish/silver color, very nice.

All fish do better with some sun, but it will not make ur aro red. Red aros get redder from tanning because they are RED aros. Tanning simply is a way to help with development. You can tan ur silver but it will not help it get red. Pink nan lights are for viewing only, not tanning, used on reds, it enhances the already red aros once u change to white lights it looks normal again.

Tanning only works ( and i do mot lnow up to what point ) with asian red aros.

The asian guys know much more than all of us about tanning. Do a search over there, at arofanatics, for instance.

Some tan golds too. I'm currently tanning my gold and I feel its gold intensity has improved a little, most dun though as golds will look gd even without tanning while only reds with superior genes will look super red without tanning, most reds will stay dull without tanning until they reach 5 to 8 yrs old. But it does put a lot of stress on the aros, so we normally only start tanning when they are abt 18" and above.
