How big do teacup rays get?

Teacup is a common name used for several rays in the trade

Check out the sticky section under species profiles. These three rays are possible, once you have identified the ray in question you can get an idea of max size

Most likely to least

Retic
motoro
hystrix

Good luck and do your research and you won't regret getting one :)

The more serious question is how long can you keep it alive. Most rays sold under teacup are retics and usually do not live more than a month. If you get one to live past that amount of time then they can get over a foot wide.

I agree and thats a good question. Ive never kept a ray but always wanted one. In the lfs I used dig ponds for they have a 6" around hystrix I was thinking of trading my 125 for but I dont know if my 210 is big enough to house for life . I am building a 1500 long plywood tank but thats not gunna be complete for a while.

Ive reaserched about rays but trying to find one that I can keep. I know motoros get about 18" witch is to big for me right now. I Never researched a retic and a hystrix might work if they stay around 15" full grow

If you go with a Florida ray do yourself and the ray a favor and convert it back to saltwater or you will be in the same boat. They do not survive in Freshwater long term because they produce too much waste for most systems to handle.

i own 3 retics atm... they do not have the more exotic patterning, are usually emmaciated, but i am in love. they are also the cheapest upfront. female motoros get bigger then a trash can lid. i picked retics as a first ray, because they stay smaller, readily available, and are notoriousely hard to keep though not in my experiance.

How big do retics get? And what will I need to keep on long term?

a few others have kept them years, mine are all relatively young. ive had them 4 monthes plus now. imo the biggest thing is to quarantine them and feed them live black worms free choice... worm them.. and give them time to bulk up. time, and abit more dedication then your average fish. nothing really special, just good solid husbandry. the average disk size seems to be in the 12" range for males and females about 16" at least thats about how big the biggest ones ive seen where. but from what ive come to understand this is pretty standard care for any wild caught ray. people say they are finicky eaters and hard to get off black worms, mine all take cut up nightcrawlers now. my biggest female also pounces pellets but hasnt yet eaten them, matter of time imo.

you can prolly find more info just cruising threads on retics here.
