LFS has some sweet looking Tropheus species in. They aren't cheap. $25-$30 per. Doing a peacock/hap/yellow lab (maybe some marleri) tank. They seem really aggressive in the tank at the store against each other. Are they that aggressive in a community tank against other species? What about if they had plenty of room would they be that aggressive?

You need a bunch of them. They are extremely conspecific. They need diets rich in vegetable protein or they can get bloat. They are probably the most diet sensitive herbivorous african cichlid you can get.

You keep them similar to Demasoni - Get at least 12 and have lots of rockwork.

So they really need to be in a big group? I was hoping to just do a couple. A veggie diet isn't hard. I do a cichlid flake that has a lot of veggie matter and other veggie supliments.

Don't want to do a big group. I want peacocks to be the focus...

Anything less than a dozen can lead to dead fish... 1 or 12+

Most tropheus are kept in a single species tank dedicated to dozens of a single species.

And Demasoni are the same way? I wouldn't mind adding that incredible color to my 110, but I don't want to add a school of them...

Demasoni are a little different in that they will attack any fish with similar markings and color patterns.

They are a little less sensitive to bloat. You can do just a single fish of either Dems or Tropheus.

Well, I doubt that I will have anything in the tank that will have anything close to the demasoni. The Auratis will have similar stripes but different colors. Here is my stock list:

Stock list for 110 gallon:
3 large male yellow labs
1 large male Kenyii
1 Auratus
2 Tretacephalus
1 Strawberry or Crystal Red Peacock
1 OB Flametale Peacock
1 Sunshine Flametale Peacock
1 Red Empress (looking like a fem so she may be going soon if she doesn’t color up and turn out to be a male)
1 Ahli
1 Syno Multipunk
1 Syno Decorus or Decorus/Multipunk hybrid
1 Bristlenose
3 Clown Loaches

tropheus are a very atractive and active fish, you can have them in a veggie community tank with gobies or variabilichromis or similar. they demand excelent water quality and constant cheking on it.
the tend to bloat easily and the more forgivefull of them is tropheus duboisi.
and high protein food will usualy lead to bloat, as well as bad water qualities

they are very sensitive but very rewarding fish.
i don't recomend em to you cause have some fish that are omnivours & carnivours.

I wouldnt mix them with malawi a tropeus will rock a peacock or even some of the mbumas i have a yellow bar moorii and two saddle reds they pick on everything and are very picky about their rock clusters, once you get a little algae growing on their rocks look out they will defend them from all the fish in your tank even the ones who have no interest in the algae.
