OK after I saw those pics and if Li says he's 100% sure it's the same fish, I'm now convinced it's a Hybrid.

Hmmmmmm I should try to make hybrid cichlas myself. Muwahhahahahahhahaha

TEMOCULUS!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank god finally you're coming around! Honestly no beef here. But the part where you went posting "Nile Perch!" and "Jardini!" in Li's threads made me go.. :WTF:

To be honest, my first thoughts were temensis based on the first picture which is at a bad angle to tell the body shape. The rosettes and the pattern of spotting remind me more of orino than mono. But the juvie pics look too deep bodied for tem or orino juvies. So in the end, I have to believe it is a temoculus.

So in truth, no one was right that voted mono or tem. I guess that makes all of us wrong.

lol It's all good.. :)

None of the above..it is an "LA" aka lower amazonias cichla sp. ;) looks to be possibly a tocantins or ajacent river cichla...but not a true temensis...nor a monoculus(come on guys!)....and hybrid is too loose of an answer as many cichla hybridize in there general region...it is an LA though ;)

Jed I vote Hybrids as in Florida Hybrids. You a collect a few thousand fries from local waters and you may get all types of Cichlas.

I love our hybrids. They're like chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get.:D

If you ever want to know the whole story on florida pbass talk to Paul Shafland in boca raton...he is director of the Florida Game and Freshwater Fish Commission's Non-Native Fish Research Laboratory and "THE guy" who brought in all the peacocks for the florida project in the early 1980's and is responsible for the breeding of hybrid "types" from different south american locals so they would do better in the south florida environment than pure strain cichla...he will tell you the exact locations of the original collection ;) he was the person responsible for bringing pbass to florida and ran the project since the beginning as a means to control exotics and later in 84 as a launch of the fishery.... so in truth you do know what your getting in your box of chocolates ;)
and you can pick out a florida hybrid from other cichla as there are distinct differences.

No need to Jed. There's tons of them in Miami if you look hard enough.

Here's one I can guarantee is from my backyard lake. Shaped like typical hybrid Mono/Occel but have Tem like stripe. I think I have two more like this in other tanks but they are hard to catch as they swim with lots of other siblings. Just tried the other day and managed to lose a few due to the stress.
