do some more reading first.

I'd go with shell dwellers though

yeah my lfs doesnt carry puffers. what about small cichlids? my lfs may have shellies, but they have a big tank of small cichlids that they label as assorted african cichlids, they are about as big as the tetras i have now, but it says that they only get to 4" would a pair of these work? theyre very colorful. im not opposed to neons, but id like the tank to have some character, and i think the cichlids would do this for me, if i just did neons i wouldnt change the tank, but adding sand and/or shells is very doable for me. i dont think that a 4" fish would be cramped in that tank, as i believe its 20" long, and ive had much larger fish in the tank, but that was also an error at my part, but i did not know nearly as much as i do now.

p.s. im not sure if my lfs carries rams or dwarf cichlids. another things id have to find out.

dont get the africans
assorted africans, well at least my place, refer to the mbuna cichlids which do not grow to 4", the smallest ones grow to 6", others grow like 8-10
but who knows, maybe those are assorted dwarfs

ill have to ask my lfs about that then. how many shellies would you suggest for ten gallons? and what else could go with them? or would it be just shellies?

if they are dwarfs would they work?

a pair of shellies and maybe a couple neons would be ok, shellies stay at the bottom so a coule neons would liven things up and they shouldnt bother each other

no offense intended, to me it's just the first step to setting up a new tank.

i could prolly actually pull off neons and shellies as the water in the are that goes into my tank is the same parameters as my lfs, and my advisor at my lfs says that they do just the same whether they are in lfs parameters or in natural habitat, although this may not make for breeding, id prefer no breeding. so stocking should be?

its whatever you want to do but africans do better with a buffering substrate such as crushed coral and neons won't like the alkaline or the hardness but to each his own. oh and the shellies may pick on/ kill the neons when they're breeding or just because they're very territorial, small but fiesty.
