test driving a car without intention of buying it in the near future

Hello; Go the various Silverado/sierra forums. There is a lot of information to be found. Some worthwhile and a lot like the stuff than shows up on this forum. Sift thru for the decent stuff.

I bought a 04 Silverado new and still have it. ( but only 36,000 miles and no hard duty) It has not been trouble free and I will do some looking around at other brands when I need another truck. I have owned Ford trucks and vans as well as a GMC sierra. I used to maintain and repair dodge vans for a carpet outfit. My brother has a 07 F-150 bought new. Hard to tell which brand is of better quality, they all have problems. Nissan and Toyota likely have decent trucks but they tend to come too loaded up.

I try to ignore the shiny stuff on a truck. Generally the more shiny stuff and the more gadgets a truck has, the more it costs to own and operate. My last two trucks have been pretty much work trucks with 4x4, AC, a stereo/CD and a tow package. A neighbor bought his 04 Silverado at the same time as I got mine. His was loaded up to the tune of an extra 18 K over my truck. Both 4x4's. About now his is worth much the same as mine. Having done some of the service work on both GM's I cannot strongly recommend them.

Even though I tend to like a Ford more than GM, I bought a GM because they were making the better deal at the time. The Silverado has been quite good on MPG's for a full sized 4x4 truck. Generally beats a bit or matches my brother's 2WD Ford.

Can't really compare a 2004 anything to a 2014.

Hello; Was not my initial intention. Manufacturers do have a track record. While the new GM may build a better truck since the government bailout, there is the taint from past products. i do believe some of their adds refer to things like "longest lasting" or such. My 2004 is likely one of those longest lasting items they refer to. So if GM can, by inference, refer to my truck in their ad's, then might I do so for a little bit.

I go to Consumer Reports for apples to apples comparisons. Car magazines need to be read with a skeptical eye as they strive to find something nice to say.

I used to do this straight out of boredom when I'm with my friends. Even by myself sometimes if I'm gettin somethin done on my car and have nothing to do. Once I convinced a guy at Porsche and convinced him that I was in a famous band and he let me take out a used carrera gt. That car was epic!

I used to sell cars myself and i would literally have undercover buddies come and pretend to be interested in the fastest cars we had, all so we could go around the block and switch seats lol. Only worked there for a few months but i swear i managed to rubber a roundabout in to the point i built up the traction.

Even taught freinds how to drive stick in new BMWs


Fun stuff but selling cars is 75% horrible so its no surprise 80% of walk ups are a joke. But atleast take the salemans card for future sake.

Hello; I had a 1977 GMC sierra. Ran good if the carb was adjusted and rebuilt often enough. Lots of small parts issues. Much rust to the point of replacing fenders and patching the cab floor. Poor MPG. However, it was very easy to work on when compared to todays trucks. I just had to work on it much more often.

This is what is wrong with america. Everyone does it so that makes it OK. Op from what I can tell you are seriously interested in the truck. At that point the test drive is considered marketing. Sales adds have theoretically done their job and got you inside, now they are counting on the truck to sell itself. The new Tundra's are great too and i recommend driving one before you purchase a new truck.

However, driving a car just to drive it at the expense of the dealership makes you one step above pond scum in my book. So anyone that condones useless joyrides is useless in my book...

yeah cause its not like everybody else in the dealership hasn't had their fare share of fun in the vehicle before you drove it.
