Teug growth thread

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's hard to believe that cb Teugs can get long quickly. Realistic 12-14" first 12 months. Not many people buy them due to seasonal availability or cuz they're usually $40 at tiny worm sizes. I only know of one person who's had their teug for 2 years+ and grew to 17".

Just like everything else with bichirs, growth rate can vary.

I wish I had measured my delhezi the day I got them back in November, I want to say they were 3-4", but today the two largest ones from that batch are at 8", and the smallest one is 5.5"

I was surprised to see all my teugs put on a solid inch over this past month, maybe in a couple more months some will slow down.

I didn't feed every day, but they were all kept together until very recently, so they all had access to the same food and all have good appetites.

So I was planning to give my little teugesli a fasting day as she's eaten nightly for the past week. Trouble is once the lights go out she swims to the front glass to visit and gives me the baby poly face look.

Bad news, I'm weak and can't resist that look.
Good news, she took a few small pieces of Massivire for the first time.

Talk about the fish training the keeper .

Thanks Jaws.

Given their potential size I'm not sure I want to add 2 more only to have them go to war. They don't seem to have an issue with other poly species though. Hmmm...

I think 2 nimbers of poly is bad, should be 3 or more. 2 poly is like asking for trouble, one will be dominant to the other and since there are no other poly aorund to speard the aggression, the bully will stress the other one and it might become fatal, imo.

Agreed, at least for these guys, which is why if I do add more it will be another 2 to give me at least 3. In the past I've had 2 of a species, but they were male / female pairs with no aggro even when courting.

Not sure I want to devote all that tank space to 3 big teugs when I have no other polys though. Might use the space for a few different species. Hmm...more to ponder.

What other polys are appealing to you ? How easily would they be to obtain ?

I will also be curious what the sexes of these fish are as they grow. Females get larger, but do they also grow faster?

Good question curious too. Will try an get a pic of mine today

As far as the other stuff, I do weekly WC at 50-60%. Pre-WC nitrates have been 10 with feeding 2 days in a row, then fasting, but as of last week I've gone to feeding every other day. Pellets 1x/wk, maybe 2x - I mix carnivore, massivore, and NLS when I feed pellets. Then the other days are either silversides, krill, live earthworms, or catfish (1x/wk just before WC).
