Hi, I am thinking about getting a Texas Cichlid, (I know its not a Monster) but I don't want the True tex, I want the Carpintis. It's also known as the Escondido, The Pearlscale Cichlid, and the Blue/Green Texas Cichlid. I have seen them for sale at some LFS, but I don't know if its a Carpintis or if its a true tex, because they are just juvies 1-2 in. The ppl who work at the lfs haven't been able to help me either. Can someone tell me how to differentiate the two as juvies? Any pics would be helpful. Thank you.

While we're on the subject does anyone have texas cichlids? Lets see!

Usually the Carpintis have larger pearls....I actually found a Carpintis in a batch of regular "Herichthys cyanoguttatus" texas cichlids at Petsmart! Bought it on the spot...

Here's a REALLY bad pic of my carpinte from Petsmart...

:iagree: the spots will be much larger and usually will be more greenish than the bluish spots of a real texas. the size of the spot will be the best way to tell though. if you have one of each next to each other the difference is very noticeable. :)

yup, larger spots, also the true texas has it's spots in more of a grid instead of scattered randomly, check out the carpintis in my gallery

I just purchased 2 at petsmart 2 weeks ago, I dont know if they are the true Texas as you are looking for, but I did knotice one has light colored eyes and the other has dark, ohter than that they look about the same. I cant tell much else about them, their only 1 inch long or so.

pics?

I was told on another forum that the Escondido isn't the same as the H. Carpintis. Does anyone have information that might clear this up? Maybe the Escondido is a H. Carpintis that originates from a particular area? Do they look the same?

It's a regional variant strain of Carpinte...Escondido is even more greener...the best looking IMO out of the Texases...

BTW Joel's pic is definitely a Carpinte
