The Biggest Rhom I've Seen In Person

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
maybe, depends on the price and if any trust worthy vendor/lfs would pack it for him.
I'm kind of between a very large diamond rhombeus or a large shoal of caribas (or a large mix shoal).

the 180g will be the only tank I'm keeping for a very long time and I don't wanna switch stocks around so need to decide wisely.
I'm more leaning towards a large shoal. Even a 14" rhom will look small in the 180g being the only fish and it'll most likely just sit there and not do much until feeding time.

I spent a lot of the time watching my rhoms via ip camera, how they behave when there's no human present is quite different compare to when I'm in front of the tank. Once they are comfortable and not hungry they won't waste a lot of their energy to actively swim around the tank most of the time. they do swim around but there's much less activity as compare to a shoal of pygos.
also, smaller size rhoms are more active than large ones from what I have seen.
here's one of the clip I recorded, you can see the larger one on the left is much less active compare to the smaller one on the right.

I have also noticed how the same rhom changes it's behavior in tanks with different width (front to back), 55g 12" wide so so active, 75g 18" wide more active, 180" ~4ft wide, very active. by active I'm comparing how they behave in different width tank, not comparing to fish like convicts.

with a shoal there's more activity going on in the tank.
I don't rule out the chance that I'll get an other large diamond, if I come across one larger than the one I had before and that happens before cariba season begins. so I have about 5 months :)

Jp80911 I don't think the pet shops around my area would help ship him. They are more into selling dog and catfood. The rhom does swim around in 75 gal with the power compact light on and when you walk up to him he will swim next to the glass to check you out. We just notice he shed 5 of his teeth the other day.

rhom grows very very slow after they reach certain size, it's very possible it's this big from the get go or just a bit smaller.
