Roomate had a red devil, who every so often would decide to pick on the other fish. To attempt to reset the terroritories my roomate would rearrange the tank when this happened, before finally giving up and trading it in... As a result the fish went from begging for food at the top when he opened the top, to hiding under the filter intake on it's side instead when he got near, and learned to do this within days, and would only eat if the top got closed again, so theres a trick it learned without having food as a reward, although it's more linked to survival instinct then anything else.

dogs and fish are diffrent things... and all living tings need food.
Dogs are also pack animals, and therefore do need attention because we have domesticated(sp?) them. thats also why dogs happend to be a great pet, becouse they are very owner responsive.
I`m just trying to say that, if you walk by your tank and your "insert fish here" comes up the surface and really pays attention to you. Its not because your cute or he just wants to say "hi", They relate you, to food.

Thats why i dont think cichlids are that intelligent... compared to say a chimp.

My uncle (a veterinarian) told me to never get a monkey of any sort becasue they are just too smart.

But my fish, whenever I sit next to his tank he just puts his face against the glass and sits right there. And he even moved all the other gravel to the other side so whenever anyone sits next to him he can sit right at that edge as well. I don't think its a protection issue because he doesn't charge or flare his gills or anything, he just wants to be next to that person, kinda like a lap fish. Strange behavior, because I have never given him any food or anything to make him do that or givin him any food after sitting in that chair.

I don't ever plan on buying a monkey.... I don't know if anyone here has heard of a little thing called AIDS

I once trained a jag to bang on the glass in morse code to tell me what he wanted to eat that day. If I gave him the wrong food he would tap out 'up yours' in morse code (he figured that part out himself)

But seriously conditioned response training will work on just about anything. The good examples I have heard are Drunken with his fish that meet him at the glass - the only time they get fed is when he is by the glass so they get conditioned to associating that with food. As for unnanons fish I dont think rearanging the tank had anything to do with it, getting chased around by a giant hand is far more traumatic than rearranging things.

With fish simple things yes complex no.

If a goldfish can be this smart, a cichlid must be even more intelligent I would think.

im sorry but i think that man is cruel, and definately a fraud. after working with and selling hundreds of goldfish when i worked at a pet store, i cant see any possible way of making a goldfish do anything like that. they are beautiful animals, but they are not that smart. just my two cents

I just introduced an 8" Red devil into my tank. My 8" Female JD started bothering it from the start. I took a stick and every time she went to bother the RD, I would chase it with the stick. I did this about 25 times. As time went on the JD would wait longer and longer before bothering the RD. I finally got sick of chasing my fish with a stick. She knew to wait longer before bothering the RD. I don't know if I kept it up, if it would eventually work, but I figured 2 hours of this was enough for me.

They are doing OK today.

I hand feed my Red Devil so he has learned to come to the top of the tank and lift his face out of the water. When people come to visit I lower my face down to the top of the tank and my amazing fish comes to the top to greet me! My friends think he is so smart and interactive! He just wants me to drop food into his mouth but they dont know that.
One day he is going to bite my nose.
