The Hypocrite thread mbu

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Whats really pissing me off is that all the people giving it MBUS need 1000gallons have never kept them there selves, there just following what ever pufferpunk says.

Read the link that I posted above, it should help put things into perspective.

While I realize that you are only attempting to make sure that people realize that these fish require a substantial tank, Pufferpunk, you are no more right today, than you were in our previous discussion on this subject. :)

Thanks for that great read RD, awesome. I will let you know what size my little Mbu hits lol. Got him @ 4 inches and in one month is 5-6 inches and SUPER active. Oh, and I already have his 300 cycled and waiting :)

A tank should not be just about big enough for a fish to turnaround.

If a zoo kept animals in cages that were just about big enough to turn around they would be closed down.

If you look at what a fish can do in the wild then we should strive to give them as much space as we possibly can, our hobby is very guilty of keeping big fish in small tanks.

Many people keeping fish with a large potential seem to always be trading them on and often do not ever keep them at the full size. I suspect that many others die of unknown deaths probably caused by poor water parameters as the fish grow large...small volumes of water are affected by large amounts of waste, often causing a ph crash which kills the filter bacteria or through nitrate levels creeping off the scale ( a mbu will die in 100 to 200 ppm water but many often test with dip strips, out of date test kits or do not test at all)

You're welcome, Kevin.

If any of the mbu bleeding heart fans want to counter point anything I stated in that previous discussion feel free to bump it up.

You don't need a 1,000 gallon tank to have pristine water quality, nor does one need a 1,000 gallon tank to provide more than adequate room for the average mbu kept in captivity.

I had my adult female Fahaka in my 60 gallon tank, she is about 1-16 inches ATM, changed the water every other day, fed 2x daily and also "messed" around with her for at least an hour a day for stimulation. In that tank she was VERY outgoing and also layed eggs for me three times in TWO days. Acouple of weeks ago I moved to her to a 125 with EXACT water params and lighting and she has been a lot more reserved and shy.

my point being that I think "too much room" might be considered less "comfy" and comforting to a fish, again that is just a thought running through my head with several fish behavior changed I have noted with moving to a larger tank. My gar is the same way.

I'm not making a comment on what I think, cause it will just get crushed by one side of the argument or the other. What I DO suggest, is someone contact the Vancouver Aquarium and ask them how many gallons their MBU enclosure is. I tried, but have not gotten an answer ( by email ). The fish is very large (i'd say somewhere in the 28"-30" range). I am just assuming here, as i couldn't measure it. Second, it has to be in a 3000+ gallon tank.

Now, I'm not saying that they HAVE to be in big tanks, but for the long run (20 year lifespan) they probably should be....

I know that most of us don't have the space for a giant tank, as an aquarium does, but don't you guys think that a place like the Vancouver Aquarium, which is world reknown, would know the proper care for a giant puffer?
