Thanks for the response J

Here we go again! Lets keep this discussion mature please...lol

^ What are you basing this on? ^

Some private emails from a Brazilian exporter. The regional wholesaler in my area is trying to cut out the middleman and import directly. He wants mostly bread and butter fish as that is what really makes money, but I have been talking to some of his possible exporters about rays, IBAMA, who sells to who, etc etc....

ETA: What I am saying is just my personal opinion based on what LITTLE information I have. Nothing is in concrete and it all could be BS. This is, after all, MY OPINION.

2. The current 5,000 quota is for '08. There is a SOLID chance another 5,000 will be released in '09. Thats 10,000 leos in about a year. Obviously Im not dumb enough to say that exactly 10,000 will come out but give or take a few thousand either way. That is is still ALOT of rays. Will the market for leos really suppport 12 MILLION dollars of rays in a year? I would be SHOCKED if so.

This is not correct it is a monthly quota. When 08 is over the quota starts again for 1/09 it is a total of 5000 leo for whole of 2009 divided into 12 months is your monthly quota.

Well thats a bummer. So only about 815 out for '08? Ive also been told that the quota may not be met some months because of seasonal flooding. I just assumed that they would make up the loss the rest of the year. Well dang...

Im still surprised to see them available though. You woulda thunk the exporters would only deal with the Asians if they are paying so much more...

It was less around 550 was total quota, as for asians not buying them all up well lets say there buying every high quality piece that can get and not the regular leo. Also good to know reason your seeing them is cause exporters need to move as much before end of year to fill quota so regular leo that people are not going nuts for are being offered at better prices right now. Also correct on river heights is delaying alot of catching so for next 4-5 months we will not see whole quota being met is what I am also told.

Odd they are letting out 5,000 a year which doesnt divide equally into twelve. Why can they just give an exact monthly number? So in reality we are probably going to see around or even less then 2/3rds the total quota because of the flooding in certain months? :irked: Thats a big kick in the pants to the local fisherman. You put a pleco ban on them, then tell them they can now sell rays but only a little over 400 a month between all of them!

I do agree with you that the Asians are buying the primo specimens.

leo is a leo to me.... 321 ...456...987.2 what ever it looks like....
