If you kept it dry for a long time, no bacteria or parasite could have survived in it - they need moisture and oxygen even when estivating/hibernating. The ozone in the air kills them too.
So, I'd tentatively discard the HOB cause.

This again leaves only the ghost shrimp (ich med was used after the break-out and I am thinking of how ich came about, not death).
