The Most 3D Backgrounds on MFK--Build Thread?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok, so I've been working on the 180 tonight. This is a new background to DBN and to my knowledge that hasn't been put in an aquarium yet. It is two 48" pieces, one was cut down for the total length of about 72".

So the first thing I did was cut out a large pocket by hand for behind the BG to hide everything.

Then I cut this smaller portion in half. You always want to cut until almost the front of the background, and then snap it by hand without hesitation. This way, the cut on the BG is jagged and it will line up when you fit them back together. If you do a straight cut with a saw, you will take a small portion of the BG out and it won't line up right.

So now I'm starting to silicone them into the tank. I use GE I clear silicone from the hardware store. I've used this many times and have never had an issue with it. Just let it cure longer than you think it needs.

Seam on the left is a little wonky, but that's just how the cookie crumbled with this install. Did it all myself with a hand saw and a tube of silicone in a couple hours, did the best I could. There are actually 5 cuts and seams total. Nice thing is that it's the perfect place for a big rock so I'll never see it.
