It should be said that fish shouldn't be bought because they are the 'in' fish. You shouldn't let other people decide what you like (fish or in general). Fish keeping is a death til you part thing. Often, getting a fish because it is 'in' leads to dumping them into lakes and rivers later. If the fish isn't one that you really want you shouldn't get it in the first place.

You have seen the threads titled "Bought a 55g, what should I put in it". That is the wrong approach; those people will end up with fish that they don't like and won't care for (mentally and physically).

:iagree: :werd: :iagree: :werd:

yeah i was once like in the beginning of the hobby when i bought a flowerhorn because it was the in fish and costed me a pretty penny but i learned.....

I agree. Get what you like and not what somebody else likes. If its one and the same then consider it a bonus.

I agree with santoury...I don't think there is a specific fish that is the "IT" fish...I just think there is a big push towards quality of the species. To have an oscar is common, but if you have a one-of-a-kind specimen, that's a different story.

Long story short...I see a big push to "Quality over Quantity".

LOL if you ask me people are looking for physically retarded fish more now. And some people think they are cool because they look wierd. Nothing personal but I would rather have a fish look the way it's supposed to. If it's off a little or whatever then fine but some of the things I see people bragging about are crazy IMO

I totally agree that should buy what you want and not what other people believe you should.
I just find it interesting how things change within many hobbies, we have seen how Polypterus have become popular for a while, P Bass, clown loach, Datnioides, japanese style style, albinos and deformed fish.
Also a short lived popularity in flowerhorns or Luohan.
Just wondering....

From what I could remember in the forums, ppl were looking for the following fishes over the past 5-6yrs.
snakeheads,paroons,ATF,payaras(armatus),gulpers,
dorados with the dats consistently mixed in

I dunno the "In" fish, but i think a BatmanRay Pair would be awesome... if they lived.

x2

To expand IMO: Sadly everyone jumps on a rare fish someone posts and most of time they don't even know what it is. I think alot of people get caught up in "this is the cool new fish to have" rather than thinking if that's the fish they have a real desire to keep.
