Yup, but sadly there will always be a market for ocean food which means theres money to be made and some greedy person who wants it all.

Right....good luck with that one.

Exactly. Not going to happen, if there's a buck to be made someone will be willing to exploit it.

+1 to Squirtles solution. "If all the insects were to disappear from the earth, within 50 years all life on earth would end. If all human beings disappeared from the earth, within 50 years all forms of life would flourish.", including the oceans...

Here's how that would go as I see it...

1: people consume less fish making it more rare in stores and restaurants.

2: in an effort to make up lost money from reduced sales fish prices skyrocket.

3: stupid people see the prices go up and a primal instinct of "Ohhhhh me want" kicks in and sales increase exponentially.

4: now people are buying more fish than ever AND paying 3-5x what they were before.

Summary: People are stupid!!!

Pretty much, look at drugs... I am a big rioter with Americas war on drugs because it has to be the most horrible way to go about it, the fish market would turn the same just like drugs. Something that used to be worth nothing that now produces enough funding for more serious crimes to take place, Even the leader of some Mexican cartel thanked Bush and Obama but...... people are so blind its sad. I also dont see the point of locking someone up whos harming themselves with people who rape and kill for joys thats just a waste of tax money but its all off topic.

This is a very good quote. Like I said theres very little positives the human race contributes to earth but an awful lot of negatives.

you place to much in fish eating world wide, fish is at the bottom of the list for most consumed meat, it is also at the bottom of the list for most consumed food. Breads has that one along with rice. and goat has the meat list by 63%.

Maybe its not as big over in Europe and the US, but in Asia, a lot of people eat fish almost daily... Just look at places like Japan and China...

you are looking at the coast of a place far larger than US, fish is not the main populations diet. mater of fact US eats more fish per capita than Asia.

no worries. once you understand the effect of ocean currents, and how we've changed them, you'll understand these fish were all doomed anyway.

What do you mean? Educate us, please, on your view, if you will.

I just read an article where they mention that it takes 2.8 pounds of wild-caught fish to raise one pound of farmed salmon. It also said that salmon farming operations in Norway produce nitrates equivalent to sewage from a city of three million people. Add in huge amounts of antibiotics, environmental destruction, and the risks involved with genetically-modified organisms and it becomes pretty clear that fish-farming is not good for the environment.

The farming of shrimp/prawns is even worse, as it is causing the widespread destruction of mangroves and estuarine habitats all over the tropics, especially South America and Asia.

Thanks, Dan. Yeah I've known similar claims but what is hard to understand is the breadth of this: are 50% of farms so inefficient or these are the worst and constitute only small %, etc.

Also, a lot of non-food, undesirable fish is used/ground up in making dry fish foods to produce edible fish. Perhaps, a weak argument as the inedible to us is still a part of the food chain and healthy ocean. I wish they used the invasive/problem fish, like the flying carp in Great Lakes, tilapia and plecos in the south, lionfish in Atlantic (impossible to catch though other than manually, one by one), etc.

Why does the shrimp farming destroy the estuarine areas? I saw this is being done at a distance from the salt waters, in big ponds, no?

None of my business but it makes it quite hard for me too to read your posts, bro. Borderline annoying, put politely. I am not a mod though. Do what you will.
