So from cladistical analysis I'm going to say that crossing plecos with any other type of catfish may be very tricky. As suspected they are far removed from th main branch of catfish. YOu are more likely to cross a rtc with a syno. :) If I do try plecos ever it will be way down the line when I have become very advanced at this.

It is an interesting fish i use to fish for them as a child in north carolina. Im just curious if maybe there's something a little more removed in sw/freshwater boundaries. :)
Hybrid striped bass(atlantic striped bass x white bass), but striped bass spawn in fresh water. I would imagine most hybrid salt/fresh species would have to be made from types of saltwater fish that migrate to freshwater to spawn.

To create a true anadromous fish would be almost impossible for a hobbyist the osmoregulatory systems are totally different. Some fish are of course capable of doing it, Striped Bass, Bull Sharks, Sturgeons, several slamonoid sp. et al. To cross a true freshwater species with a true saltwater species would take some very specialized science. The best chance in my opinion and this is a reach would be some type of wrasse and an some type of Mbuna or use one of the Danakilia sp. from the salt lakes of northeaster Africa in the Danakil Depression. The main issue to me is the ability of this theoretical hybrid to effectively osmoregulate in both environments, the creation of a true frankinfish. Interesting to speculate, it's highly unlikely at best.
We digress.

True, the two species are very closely related. I'd be interested in hearing about other more distantly related SW/FW hybrids but I don't think much work has been done to attempt it.

There are sw catfish that are close to fw ones. The problem def is the osmoregulation or in laymen terms the regulation of salt and water pressures inside the body. Most sw fis cannot transition for more than a few weeks at best and vice versa.would be interesting to see if a hybrid could exists in either envitlrinment or would it be a balance requiring brackish type water. In any case hybrids open up a world of possibilities but im trying my best to KISS this first attempt. :)

LOL agreed, KISS is a good philosophy. Walk before you run.

Very interesting subject and great thread.

I have been brainstorming and planing how i will accomplish this where i am living now. I will come up with a model or something to display soon to show what i am plannig. :)

hmmm that was easy enough lol. Turns out I have one male and one female suncat. :) Now to decide. Do I go collect mature bullheads or just use some of the other fish I already have here. I could try using my raphael or syno catfish lol. maybe both? I for sure have a male and female suncatfish so it is possible to make a hybrid even with just one individual of another species, but that does not guarantee success. lol.

SuncatxRaphael= a spiny catfish with a black spot. That sounds nice to me.
SuncatxBullhead= looks like a reg cat to me.
SuncatxSyno= looks umm a syno with a large spot?
I'm suscribed so you'll see me more often here. lol.
