I'm not aware of tap water having ammonia in it, at least mine doesn't. Companies make products to nuetralize all harmful chemicals in tap water. I have ask, how do you do water changes?

Either way it is a good thread. I'm still not convinced about Prime, I read through some of the thread someone posted and the second trial had problems and had ammonia for 16 days.

Water Changes.....

I have a heated resevoir that I age the tank water in for days.... After treating it... Water Change time I made a python out of Gravel Vacuum, 1/2ID of clear Tubing from HD (75ft cause I have a 2200Sq Ft Ranch) and a 3ft section of garden hose at the end to connect to the resevoir that pumps the aged treated water (which by the way comes from a tapped main line) after the appropriate amount of tank water is Removed, into the tank via Shutoff valve.

Yeah, ammonia for 16 days... Not good.

Look into it! You will be surpeised what's in tap water.... At least "city" tap. No need to to be full of pride on this site. No one cares if you are misinformed about something. The internet is a Wodnerful tool if used correctly. it can also be misleading as well. one just has to be self motivated enought o seek out truth...

So you're using normal tap water? Treat it and age it?

Ok. About Prime. It breaks the chlorine+ammonia bond which is chloramine (what most municipalities use now, instead of regular chlorine.) Chloramine will NOT "age off" like regular chlorine, and actually persists in water for weeks+.

Prime does NOT REMOVE ammonia, it detoxifies up to 1ppm of ammonia in your water. It is still available to your biobugs to use, and hence why it is such a valuable tool if you are for some reason or another, forced to cycle your tank with fish in it. Depending on your water's pH, the amount of free (toxic ammonia) is different than the TOTAL ammonia in your water. http://www.dataguru.org/misc/aquarium/AmmoniaTox.htmlhttp://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...9BKcoNopQ&sig2=XRXGqUJpaMmk31wuE8bCeg&cad=rja

Trust me, I've looked at my local water report. My water has no ammonia or chloramines (chlorine/ammonia compound). So I don't see the point you're trying to make. And if it did, that's what tapwater conditioners like Seachem Prime are for.

Yup, same thing that granular activated carbon filters do. They 'get rid' of chloramine by breaking the compound, which results in a small amount of ammonia. Nothing that a good filter system can't take care of.

Yes.... I treat it with Stress Coat... It's always worked well.

Good thing that I don't use Prime then.... Thanks for the warning... :)

You are obviously missing the point, Prime is a very valuable tool. You would not want to remove the ammonia so your BB don't starve. Prime is way better value for the $$ than any other dechlorinating product on the market.

I get a large bottle of API's product for less than $8 compared to the normal price of $13+

What is so special about prime?

I have Tropheus African Cichlids..... My BB Will Never Starve!!!!
