Went out today, just too see if it was a fluke.
Dragged this 25 pounder in on the 4 the cast.
9 degrees with 20 mph tail wind.
Found that a heavy duty metal saw blade, chops them up into 1/4 quite nicely. Then once flash frozen. The fins cut off faster than filleting a crappie.

37 " long. Silver carp, the jumping kind. Or Maybe bigheaded Asian carp. They both look about the same.

What are you using for bait/lure?

How do they fight?

Bouncing a treble hook off the bottom. They fight well for 32 degree water. This one had 4 strong runs were he pulled the drag for 10 foot of line.
The river is normally about 20,000 Cfs, it is down to about 2000 Cfs during the cold of winter. They are gathered at the bottom of a dam.

This is some interesting stuff, whenever I fish an area with Asian carp I'll have to try one sometime, from the description it probably tastes better than sockfish haha.

I don't know were you live but firing a weapon into a body of water here would likely see you either in jail, bankrupt and definitely never seeing said weapon again. same goes for any handheld weapons used on fauna, regardless of invasive status.

In PA you can spearfish for Burbot while diving but you have to use a handheld/propelled one no guns allowed. You're also allowed to bow"fish" for carp, cats, and suckers which is bs, I've seen more than one fishery destroyed by excessive bowfishing harvest. But I'm thinking you're right about the gun thing, WCO would be pretty angry if they saw you shooting at carp in a public lake

So, you're snagging them....or are they attacking the hook?
Definitely snagging. I will be surprised if the DNR does not start netting them some day. 5 years ago their was not any Asian carp. Then in 2012 floods, the river flowed 60,000 CFS all summer. The power station low head dam 40 miles down stream. Got jumped.

I have seen a few people bow fishing for them. I think in another 10 years, The Asian carp will be about the only thing below the Dam.
It's just a mater of time before they get into the lake, and head up state.

Sad situation, but hopefully the natives survive. It'll be a nightmare once they get in to the Great Lakes, which they most likely will with the economic issues claimed to be caused by keeping waterways with Asian carp present closed off from the lakes, but it's going to be a lot worse environmentally and economically if they enter the watershed.
