The question is for King of the aquarium, so I will say that by me basing this on fish that are kept in private aquarium in the home, I will have to say that it is the asian arowana ! Just one mans opinion!!
 
Each to their own
however criteria I would use are realistic tank requirements and sheer prescence. Every one wil have their own likes and dislikes, for me it will always be a toss up between polypterus and....l.......

Definitely any polypterus, they're curious, funny and have their own character, I have an ornatipinnis that likes to sit on my clown knifes back, they're hearty and if you have the right set up they'll crawl out and "tan", you can always tell who has been out during the day.
 
for me it whould be the MBU puffer, but it could be because i just finally got mine like 4 days ago.... :grinno: :naughty:
