The single biggest regret in my life...

Another perspective: if you spent the day working with fish and stuff, do you think you could go home at night and still enjoy your own fish? Could be for some people, but it could also be a quick way of burning your self out of something you love.

I think this goes back to the question we're asked in elementary school... "What do you want to be when you grow up?" And no kid says, "I want to push paper for a living." I think a better question is what you want to do, because the above question indicates that what you do to earn money is your sole identity, and we know that's not true. Individuals on this site have a common passion -- fishkeeping -- but everything else varies.

There is also the fact to consider that if you were a fish store owner, you may quickly become disillusioned and bored with that job, and wish that you had a higher-paying job which allowed you to keep regular hours and afforded you enough to live comfortably and enjoy the hobby of fishkeeping. Retail's no fun. In this "life," the life you've got, you have time to spend with your son, time to do what you enjoy, and maybe that's what you should focus on. Because the struggling fish store owner might trade with you any day.

You can just get your son on the right track, then look at you options. My dad changed careers at 65 and graduated college when I was in grad school. The only time you are really stuck is if you choose to be.

Wise words...

Perhaps when I've finished paid my mortgage and finished paying the loan i took out for 75 thousand dollars worth of child care for my two kids over the last 8 years. :)

That is my point exactly! Why should those in the pet/fish industry not be paid just as well as, well... someone like me?

Depends on what you do in that industry. The guy up here who owns the well known LFS drives a Mercedes. Look at a job in the finance division within local tropical fish distributors.

Funny, in college I was a marine bio major thinking I could just work at seaworld. But then they told me I had to study Chem and bio... etc. Long story short, couldn't hack it and now I work in a cube just like you.

But if i were to get a part time job, it would be at a LFS.

I hear you abou the LFS. I'd love to net platies for people.

Cubes are man's worst invention.

Eh, I know I'll feel like you in a decade or so, I'm slowly working my way into a desk job because I need to pay the bills. Working on 2 seperate degrees and not really sure I want either one, Mech. Enginnering and Nursing. I keep my hobbies because It gives me something to keep working for and I'm afraid that my interests becoming my work will kill the enthusiasm for them much as pursing nursing broke my intrest in it.

Did that while I was in Grad school. Almost sold my tanks and left the hobby because of it.

Really? I think I might welcome it greatly. Fish/fishing has been a huge part of my life. I'm not sure I'd burn out.

Working at a zoo with the fish livestock would be a dream - again if it paid well.

I guess I want my cake and.... is that too much to ask dear friends?
