I had a 7 gallon container of pothos growing in my oscar tank which had a weekly nitrate accumulation of 30-40 ppm. I calculated the pothos was only removing about 1 ppm nitrate weekly. You need a lot of individual stalks and a lot of growth in order to make a significant difference. You need something like duanes duanes had ... I believe they were papyrus plants?

markstrimaran markstrimaran has shown that algae use only ammonia/ammonium, but plants use either ammonia/ammonium or nitrate (also nitrite).
Thx Mike. Sorry I tag you when ever the subject comes up. I don't like taking credit for others hard work.

Algea will remove nitrate just very slowly, like in a month, from 20ppm to 0ppm

But I takes out ammonia fast enouph to prevent it from ever being dangerous, in a 1 fish per 3 gallon tank

I've had pretty good experience with pothos. I have 8 plants growing in my system and I don't know the exact numbers but id guess about 10 ppm worth of nitrate reduction. Maybe as high as 20ppm, probably not but maybe. I'm still doing 80% water changes per week and I get up to about 20ppm nitrate between changes.

That is definitely some myth busting! What are your thoughts about high phosphates and temperature temp for growing plants? Any advice for plants?

My anacharis looks like it is melting. Ferns are getting black lines on them. It’s only been in for 5 days. I just took the rubber bands off the roots and put all of it in the sand. The floating plants at the top looked worse, so I also put them in the sand. Been doing 8 hour of light per day. Okay one day I accidently left it on for 12. Temp was at 80, but I’m thinking of lowering it to 78? Ph 7.6, NH4+=O, NO2=O, nitrate gets up to 30ppm. Phosphate probably is still high...haven’t tested it in a while.

The hair algae is pretty much gone. Been dosing with Excel and also seachem potassium. Also have root tabs in the gravel.

Still quite a bit of algae, but it looks a lot better than it did!

Love the pic of the Moke on top of the buried del. I would not have even noticed it until you pointed it out and took the picture from another angle. very cool shot!

Tank is looking good and polys are happy looking.

Thats normal for that plant, the plant is adjusting to your water, aslong as the steam is not rotting the leaves will grow back, i had the same problem i just let it be.

The black lines on the fern are normal most of the leaves that are there now will probably turn brown and die but will be replaced be new ones before the old ones die. Then the new ones that are acclimated to your tank will be good and new will grow.

Thank you! Really appreciate the compliment cause I’ve been diligently changing the water and trying to get the plants to grow. There have been quite some burying shenanigans. I found the albino trying to bury the other day. Guess the del is teaching the others how to bury?

Thank you! The del is super charismatic. The moke(Soba) has also been a lot more interactive. You know how I love my mokes.

What grow light do you recommend? I switched out the power strip on my fluval 6 gal with the 55gal. Now the 55 is on one with a timer, but I need to figure out how to program/ set it. Will look up instructions on line.
