The Worst Escapes

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
coatis are just south american raccoons.
I've worked with several, and am lucky to still have 10 fingers.
Get a raccoon first there free and just as mean.

I lost a dog more than once. We also had a 6 foot python that just disappeared in thin air.
And ive had arowana suicides. Those are all real bad escapes.

The other night at 4 am, I hear "Zero Messages", from a female voice. It's my answering machine. I thought I was dreaming, so I went back to sleep. Was awoken again by the same thing, a few minutes later. The only way the answering machine would do that is if you push the button. I knew then that someone was in my house, and had stepped on it. I crawled out of bed in my undies, grabbed the Louisville Slugger, and was prepared to kill. I slammed open the door and hit the lights at the same time, and there is my chinchilla, sitting on my answering machine. I forgot to latch the cage. After much chasing around, I got him back in the cage. Was totally freaked out.

   worst escape story ever:clap

if were doing normal escapes, dogs escaped a few times, its even chewed through the lead as a puppy and ran off:swear:

I left the key in the lock on my argus monitor's cage. He was able to open the lock from the inside and get out. I came home to a terrified cat (who usualy walks up to my 3.5 ft. savannah like he owns him.) and a 3 ft. argus monitor that cramed himself inside my stove as soon as he saw me.

coati mundis are friendlier, smarter, and nicer to look at. If you managed to get yourself bitten byh one, even a wild one, I doubt it was the coati's fault.

no point in disparaging an animal. I WILL buy a coatii.

Ok get a coati, they can be great animals.
They should have a huge outdoor zoo quality enclosure, and need a lot of intellectual enrichment. Don't believe everything you are told about them, especially if the person giving information is a breeder/seller.
I don;t think they are specifically bad animals (no animals are bad), but I have worked with at least 4 different individuals. Granted, I was administering vaccinations (they should be vaccinated against rabies and distemper), sedatives, anesthetics, and assisting with surgeries. These are probably the times when you are most at risk, but these are also times when you will have to be able to capture and fully restrain your animal before brining him/her to get medical attention.
One of the coatis that I treated was very affectionate and friendly, but I wouldn't be able to force him to do anything by myself.
They are very smart and very willfull.
I definitely would suggest that you research how they are kept in zoos and then try to replicate the best qualities of those enclosures.
I don't think that coatis are impossible to keep responsibly, but that's probably how my post sounded, :footinmou sorry.
Be warned---coati mundis are not domestic pets! They have not been bred for long enough to produce a house pet.
Be perpared for the worst to happen and hopefully it never will.

Good luck
Sorry if I came off like a jerk.

This is my worst escape story......although it has a happy ending.

I have 2 african clawed frogs that were in a 1 gallon tank. My husband came home for lunch, opened the lid on the tank and fed the frogs. He went back to work, forgetting that the lid to the tank was open. I woke up from a nap, go to use the john, and here is my frog sitting in front of the can. I was like OMG! What do I do? He wasnt moving. So, I scooped him up and started running warm water on him, and cleaning the dirt off of him.
After about 5 minutes, he starts hopping around again. I run him back to the tank and placed him in there, and he starts swimming like nothing ever happened. I was so relived! That was 3 weeks ago, and Cujo ( my frog) is just fine. :D
