They have arrived! Pics!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have my spraybar pointed at the wall - this helps keep the water lettuce from blowing everywhere, but also keeps the current down because the polys don't like a lot of current. (And I can still get surface agitation.) Even if you have a lot of surface agitation, the water lettuce will then just clump together which isn't the worst thing. It'd be like close to shore vs deeper in a water body. Plants aren't always perfectly dispersed. :)

Yeah i think the larger tank would definitely be just driftwood and rocks. bare bottom as in just glass?
Sorry, no, that's not what I should have said - I will never go bare as in just glass. Bare for me, which means just not with a ton of rooted plants in the substrate. :) Maybe some lilies so that again more room at bottom, more cover up high. We'll see.

I think you guys have done your job at talking me into it haha. What kind of lilies were you thinking about using??

I have my eye on the red tiger lotus.

People say that if you let them get to the surface they always will (some like them bushy and short) but I'd want them to grow tall for this purpose.

I won't use them now though - I'd have to totally rescape and right now I'm happy with how things are. With my new LED light my Swords have sent up these cool shoots that go near the surface.

Yeah I just had to totally redo my scape and that was a total pain!

How long have you had your WL growing ? Read that they eventually die off when kept in doors any truth to that

Well a really long time, however each week at WC time I compost a bunch of plants (have to have some open water at the surface) so I always just keep the best looking ones. So they are constantly reproducing vs. getting old I think....

That's a really smart idea. I think I'm going to try this out.

Also, I read this as keeping them in doors in a literal way (like inside a door??) and it took me rereading this like 5 times to understand what you were saying and i feel dumb haha:confused::oops:o_O

A combination of water lettuce roots trailing downward and red lotus stalks rising to the surface is great for polys. Keeps the bottom open and creates the more subdued lighting they like. Our Walmart used to sell the dried nymphaea bulbs for $2.99. Just pop them in and they would sprout within a week.
