They may be almost extinct in the wild, but...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
it is mainly due to the stocking of food fish... A lot of others are already gone and more are shrinking in numbers... when you grow these out let me know I would be interested in getting some, or know someone who will be... it would be great to keep this fish well available in the trade...

yes for about a week it semed like he would breed all the feamales at the same time then i would just put in a holding net for about a day then strip the fry all to gether then throw the fry in the same tank usually a 20 or 29gallon

I just ordered a sponge filter, pump and heater for a 20-29 and some fry food. I was thinking of just dropping the fems in the tank and then yanking them when they drop the babies.....

I've never shipped fish before but if you were to pick up the shipping costs, packaging, etc, I would send some out. The male and one female came from one LFS and the other female (and probably another male as the big guy hasn't tapped that one yet) came from another LFS. These guys don't tend to use the same breeders so I'm pretty confident that they are not inbreeds. The parents may be but the the babies should not be. At least half of them!?!?!?!

And the main reason I went out and bought females at ridiculous prices was because I heard about how endangered they were. Time to do my part to help the species and the hobby...

No, mine looks pretty much like the one in the last pic in my first post in the thread. Mine has the red going a little higher on the flank, but it's pretty similar. Mine is all geeked out for the ladies though, so he may be showing more than that guy....

looking forward to seeing him in video..

Thats what i do ..i hate stripping..risk losing some fry etc..some parents {females} need to be with the young..venustus need to be with their babies 11 days because all the babies go into her mouth at night.. but what ever works for folks ..

Does your fish look like this one? He was sold to me as the same as yours..Zebra Obli. here he is one color and then he changes to another..do yours do that too..congradulations on babies.. i will love to see them too.

That my friend is a Haplochromis sp. 44 or "Thickskin". Not to be rude, but the guy selling them didn't know what he was talking about. He looks pretty good I might add. Want to sell him?:D

Edit:
BTW, they are notorious for changing color with their moods n' such. Your looks as though he just woke up of might be a little stressed. (i.e. not the dominant male)
