Thinking about a pleco

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have an L397 and love him, although I may be being biased because L397s were my favorite pleco (who wouldn't love that colour?!) and I was lucky enough to get one as my first pleco as well :D

I rarely see mine but I think that's because he shares a tank with my green terror, and she can be a bit of a bull at times. Before he went in her tank he was in a peaceful community and I seen a fair bit of him, adequate cover and calm tank mates was all it took for him to be out and about.

They max out around 6" and have some of the coolest patterns, and the bright orange stripe colouration is a real eye catcher.

Only downside is the poop... My gosh the poop is spastic! If you've never kept plecos before, be warned! 10 3-6" goldfish didn't produce as much poop as one 4-5" pleco does. Every other day I have to syphon poop out from under wood where it accumulates so quickly!

But yeah, I suggest L397 because they're just awesome :D

That is a good looking pleco.

I’ve kept common pleco’s before, I had one for about 10 years before I put it in my koi pond at work. He was definitely a poop factory. I’ve just never kept fancy pleco’s lol

Any information on a L014a pleco?

Be kinda interesting to keep the “Aureus” or Gold theme

This is not the pleco you are looking for. I absolutely love mine. She has tons of personality, watches you dances around for food. The downside is that they are absolute garbage disposals and there is no chance you will have eggs survive and they arent particularly graceful, so they are going to disturb your tank a lot. They also come from very high flowing rivers, so they need at least a reasonable amount of circulation.

they get 12" and here is what planet catfish says their diet is

"Sinking pellets and frozen bloodworm are ideal although all prepared foods that reach the bottom are accepted. Larger individuals will tackle whole king prawns and mussels with relish. Will eat garden snails and the first breeder of this genus feed their fishes meat and veg in the form of pumpkin. An omnivore that will eat most things and shares with the wood-eating plecos the unusual habit of eating the skin of vegetables before the flesh."

the L397 is also one of my favorites but I didn't suggest them because as you mentioned, the eggs, also I've never seen them for less than $150 locally

Yeahhhhhhh definitely not the L014a then

Thank you for your valuable information, raps has Blue eyed red fin Rio Tapajós plecos in stock I’ve just been browsing through them. Googling pictures

the blue eye red fins also have a lot of personality and mine are always out and while you don't care about algae eating they are the best Ive ever seen

From what I saw these guys are big meat eaters. Cute though

Feeding Unlike the popular opinion of many other loricariids, Hypancistrus are more carnivores than algae eaters. This is backed up by a small and lightly toothed mouth that indicates they are poor algae scrapers. Provide small and frequent supply of mainly meaty foods such as dry discus food, bloodworm and even brineshrimp with the infrequent offering of flake or algae tablets.
