Our hyperactive foxy passed away in January, so I know about how energetic little dogs can be, and I haven't ruled out another foxy. We just missed out on a foxy X beagle last week, if the owner decides to breed them again she'll let us know, I think it would be a good mix.

We have also thought about getting a mutt, and I'm not against the idea, although a lot of the ones at the local SPCA are staffy x or mastiff x kinda things which my other half doesn't really like.

*sigh* Nothing worse than idiots backyard breeding their pet dogs to create awful "hybrids"
These are the types of dogs that end up in shelters.

Why is a mutt or crossbreed any more likely to end up in a shelter than a purebreed?
Personal preference based. Most people prefer pedigreed dogs than mutts. I know a lot of people here who prefer purebreeds than crosses. Don't get me wrong I had a 15-yr old mutt myself (labrador, shih tzu and pomeranian I think) until he passed away a year ago. RIP.

I keep three female minpins and a male dobermann myself. Don't underestimate the toy dogs indeed. Minpins happen to have a rather strong disposition. Invite strangers and they begin to yap loudly and continuously even if you carry them to another room. And my third minpin is just a wimp. She gets scared easily and scuttles under furnitures when there is a stranger.:nilly: Individual personalities I guess.:)

People who breed their dogs properly and responsibly, who are breeding purebred dogs of show quality and lineage are doing it to better the breed and honestly care about welfare of their pups and breeding stock. People who irresponsibly breed their pet dogs because "junior needs to see the miracle of life", or "Rover and Missy would have totally cute puppies and we can sell them for a stupid amount of money" or people who are just too damn lazy to get their pets spayed or neutered are the cause or the thousands of dogs killed for no reason at all every year. No, it's not just cross breeds but you said it yourself, most of the dogs you have seen in shelters are just "mutts" For every puppy born, the life of another is taken away.

I've done a lot of volunteer work with local animal shelters and it's absolutely heartbreaking to see how many animals suffer and die needlessly.
I find it very hard to believe that you are unable to find a gorgeous pup that you love at a local shelter.

I never realised how much hard work it was keeping a dog until we got our pitbull. In London you don't have many big gardens, so they need to be taken for walks nearly everyday...and since our puppy is only 10 months old but really strong it's been hard work. You're lucky you will have a massive back garden so yours can have a lot of exercise. Ever thought about a guard dog? Like rottweiler or pitbull? They are nice dogs to have :)

I have two black labs that are insane. They love to run and swim and will cry all the way home because they don't ever want to stop.

like lupin said, most prefer pure breeds.
funny thing is mutts generally have a more reliable disposition than a lot of pure breeds. a lot of the time their health is generally better and they seldom get the genetic diseases present in many pure breeds.

if you are in love with a certain breed of dog and want that dog for a specific purpose then a pure bred dog is the way to go.... it will have the strength and the ability that you seek, as long as it is bought from reputable breeder... if you want a family dog and is a all around good family loving pet ... then choose the one that appeals to you from a local shelter... they have all the heart and love to give, maybe even more because somehow i know they know that you selected them to be your companion... but the most important thing i see here... is choose a dog you and your partner both like ... a dog that will be nurtured and loved by both of you.. a dog is a member of the family....

Whatever you get make sure you ADOPT from the (local) shelter. That's what I did and was the best decision I ever made. Nothing like giving a misfortuned dog, a happy new life.
