thinking bout setting up a breeding tank

Sponge filters will end that worry. I run sponge filters on my fry tanks and now all my tanks. Never lost a fry to em. My baby pleco likes to hide in the tube from my cutteri cichlid fry.

hmmmm, thats true... never even thought of that ..... but what would i do for the HOB on the tank ? and dont you need BB in order to complete the cycle in the water ? like can i just buy a new sponge filter and toss it in and not worry or ? like i have a 10g tank right now and i guess i could always just get like 20-30 small guppies and a sponge filter and try that but do i still need to keep the HOB going or what should i do with it ?

No you can do it with a new filter just give it time to cycle. What kind of hob do you have? I used to fit aquaclear sponges over the intake of my hobs works the same as a prefilter.

i have just a cheapy aquatech HOB from walmart that does up to 15gallon or something ?.... is it better to use a sponge filter with a powerhead or air pump ? i have a extra maxi jet 1200 laying round and in powerhead mode does 295gph ....

I wouldn't use a power head on a fry tank. The current will be too strong for the fry. I use air pumps rated for double the amount of the sponge filter.

yea i just looked and it is a AQUA-TECH 5-15 filter... small little turd lol.... so i can buy just a filter for a sponge filter and then just slide it on the bottom then eh ? do you not have to block off the bottom so the fry cant swim up the bottom of the strainer ?

I don't know how the intake looks on those hobs. I always used aqua clear filters. If you cut the sponge just enough that the intake isn't all the way thru you should be ok. When I did it I would use scissors and open the blades as wide as I need then push the scissors half way thru the sponge and cut it.

so ya would cut the sponge horizontally so the strainer of intake is only half way through the sponge ? i think the OD of the intake is like 3/4" or so ..... maybe id be better to just get a whole sponge filter and use a air pump on it and just lose the HOB ? or use em both.... and i should prolly ditch the gravel in the 10g tank too then eh ? or does it no matter for guppies ?

No cut it vertical. You could use both If you want. The gravel doesn't matter but you could take it out. I always used sand in my fry tanks. It's easier to clean and fry won't get lost in the gaps.

Why would ya cut it vertical ? So ya can wrap it around any size of pipe ya want ? And ya I've had fry get stuck/lost in gravel before, thinking all just do a barebottom likely

Yup if you cut it vertical it should slide over the intake like a glove does your hand. Unless you need it horizontal.
