thinking bout setting up a breeding tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Lol I thought bout that too.... Going to have to call or email the company and ask the diameter and height of the sponge filters they have to make sure it'llt fit in the tank haha

I 2nd the motion on breeding convict cichlids. However, if you wish to have something that will mass produce without killing each other and with little or no maintenance, guppies would be wise. Cichlids have aggression issues. Esp convicts. A mated pair will, and can, kill any other fish in a small 30gal. However, guppies are small, thats the only downside to them being feeders. One possible thing you can do other than guppies are Swordtails and Mollies. i havent tried to mass produce mollies/swordies as feeders yet, so i can't say much on how it might work. ;)

How would you go about mass producing guppies?

Add water and about 10 guppies, soon you will have tons, I use to do this but my cichlids breeding and going into the tank with them would eat all the fry.

do i need to maintain the water quality with the guppies ? like weekly water changes and such or can i just leave em go at her ?.... and i also checked out what size the sponge filters are they have and they smallest is 11" diametre lol thats almost as wide as the little 10g tank i have :o

I do water changes. If not the feeders could become sick and possible become diseased witch you don't want. This is my little sponge filter I got in my 15. Something like this is what you want it's not tall but not too wide either. ImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1361465598.589644.jpg

ya if i can find one about as round as say a pop can, or even bit bigger that would be idea in my 10g i have here for the guppies...something no bigger then like i guess 6" diametre would be alright could stick it somewhat in a corner outta the way

molly - livebearer would be perfect n easy maintain. use small hang on filter, n sponge air filter, aquarium gravel, fake plant, flake food.

ya im debating between either guppies or some mollies of somesort...all though i could likely get a dozen guppies for a few bucks but mollies seem to sell for like few bucks apeice that a expensive breeding tank could add up fast, maybe i'll keep my eyes open for some mollies, or cons, or some guppies on local classifieds... can i keep them just in the 10g i have here or should i upgrade to a bigger tank ? it sits on my sons dresser which is like 30.5" x 26"
