Thinking of building a setup for a boa or python

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would say a red tail boa or a common boa would be the way to go if you are looking for an impressive animal with some size, if you want it to stay smaller though, maybe a ball python. i will see if i can't find the pictures of my common boa.

Skip the snake and just get the spider monkey!

Don, it is obvious that you do not know a lot about snakes.

So, before everything else, REFRAIN FROM AN IMPULSE BUY.

Next, you will have to choose the type of snake you want ( I ASSUME HOTS DON'T EVEN COME INTO THE EQUATION).

Next, the size ( AVOID THE BIG ONES PLEASE, NAMELY RETICULATUS, BURMESE, SEBAE, NATALENSIS, ANACONDAS AND THE LIKE ). All of these can, and will, eventually, be dangerous.

Next, you will have to decide whether you want ground snakes, arboreals or semi arboreals.

Arboreals are the ones that require most from your herp experience in maintaining their adequate environment. If you want to go this route, I would suggest an AMAZON TREE BOA ( Corallus Hortulanos ). They are your typical entry level arboreals. Refrain, for now, from Green Tree Pythons and Emeral Tree Boas.

In the semi-arboreal field you will find most of the Carpets. SOme less arboreal, ( as the beautifull Bredli ) ), some more arboreal. Some are more difficult to keep and need to have special requirements ( Diamonds, I believe ).

In the so called ground level- WHICH I WOULD SUGGEST YOU START WITH - I would refrain from Balls. You will get tired of them. ( just my opinion )

Look into captive bred Boas Constrictors and/or Blood Pythons ( you have loads of very good breeders in the US ).

Thanks Mig.

No impulse buys from me. I'm going to start building soon and as need as much information as possible. I bought 2 books, one on boas and one on pythons by Bartlett and Wagner. Def. don't want anything huge.

I would love to have a blood. Are they arboreal or semi? Heres what I'm thinking.

If youre just joining in and havent read the previous post, I'm building a (now bigger than last night) 6' tall 4' wide and at least 3' deep vivarium. I will throw it on sketch up to show. I know its going to have a small filtered pond in it. I def. want at least one aboreal python. I have experience with herps but this would be the first snake set up for me. So i want something that i know i can handle.

So far this is what we've discussed......

  • Some type of morelia, Morelia s. Cheynei (Jungle Carpet)
  • Python curtus brongersmai (Blood Python)
  • Python Regius (Ball Python)

The measures you are planning on are much too large for arboreal snakes.

As I said, Bloods are "ground" snakes. For ground snakes there is a rule of thumb for the terrarium size, which is that the snakes could be as large as half the perimtre of the terrarium. So you could try a 3 to 4 foot snake. Ground snake.

I suggest a male Blood.

Arboreals do not feel comfortable in a lot of space and your prohjected terrarium seems too high for me. You will have problems maintaining an adequate heating gradient.

This might be a dumb question, but why is it too big?
