This a good trade??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I know needlenose aren't gar, more like charcin..
I liked the trade... round here fire eels cost about 20 dollars for 5-6'', so a 10-11'' would cost me about 70-90.
I think its a good trade.

a 11" for 90 bucks? u can order one offline for less, and 5" more does not contistute a 70 dollar increse exspecially in a fish that it would only take a few months to gain that length.

if u like the trade then thats fine. just sayin from a monetary value the trade really isnt that good. heck iv only ever seen one niger in my area. (not counting TFP)

Needlenose Gar aren't Characins. You're confusing it with Pike Characins. Needlenose Gar are Needlefish, in the same order as Ballyhoo and Flyingfish. Specifically, Asian Needlefish, Xenetodon cancilla

lets see niger costs for me bout 50 to 70 bucks. fire eel 15 and needle nose fish(not a gar) is 10. bad trade. very bad but if u want them

fire eel gets to 30"(will outgrow ur 55g and even thr 90g u want)
needle nose is NOT a gar. acts nothing like a gar, morphology is totallly different, they are not gar.

But considering he has a 55 ATM a niger will outgrow this easily. Hell it can be longer than the whole length of the tank!

In cash value yes he may have lost some money but in reasonability of keeping the fish he got or a niger. The fish he got will be easier. I would never ever get a niger, they need huge tanks. if I knew I could house a niger I would get it otherwise the fire eel and needle nose are much easier in terms of tank size and reasonability. :)

Alex, just sayin
Needlefish needs 90g (minimum)
Fire Eel probably needs a 175
Thanks for the clariaton on the needlefish... damn lfs told me that it was a characin and only grew to 6-7''.......... do you now full grow size of these guys?? I do like him, I got him to accept pellets and shrimp.
I am going to see if the fire eel can go in my dad's 150 when he cycles it back up... if he wants to return to fish keeping.
Thanks for all your help AJ, I apperciate it!

Pretty big. More than 6". According to FishBase, 40 cm. Probably about 16", max in the wild. Figure about a 12-14", in a large tank with good water and a varied diet. Glad to help.

this is true. but as a trade value, it was a bad trade. just sayin. the fire eel isnt a whole lot better though. it can and will get to well over 24"

and AJ is right. exspect about 12 to 14" from the needle nose.

ok thanks, a 90 should be good for him..

I usually humor the guys at my local stores by asking their opinions. As to my fire eel I asked how long he would be okay growing out in my 72 before going into the 180. "He'll be fine in the 72 for life" he says "fire eels only get three feet long". And he was serious! Then he scoffed when I told him the 72 was filtered by an fx5 and 405.
