Awesome site and cool fish. Any thoughts on mixing the sunfish with jack Dempsey adults. The jacks I got don't see. Too aggressive. 125 4 foot tank.

You probably could but sunfish like water cooler than JDs.

I imagine going with a southern strain like the Louisiana Long Ear would work fine. JD's would need water warmer than a pumpkinseed would like, but I think there are strains of sunnies that would work. After all the Southern US still has a ton of them

We bit bluegill and a few others here in southern Nebraska and the lake water temp
Feels awfully similar to my jack Dempsey tank 69-71. What temp. Does the pumpkinseed like? Cause that one is one of the ones I want the most.

At those temps, you'd be fine. My sunfish can tolerate temps up to 84 for short periods in the summer as long as its well oxygenated.

If you are going to catch some sunfish for your tank, I would recommend staying away from Bluegill. IME they are very, very aggressive to all fish, not just other sunfish. The 2.5" Bluegill I have is way more aggressive than my Greens (most of which are larger than it).

Well I hope u are wrong about the bluegill cause I just put one in my african tank. Temp is 78-80 lots of oxygen (I like bubbles) so far my male mentioned is keeping the blue gill cornered and even the male johhanni is holding its own. Seems the blue gill thusfar wants this one rock outcropping and to be left alone. He is 5 inches. Ill keep a wagchfull eye.

I don't have my jd tank with me yet left behind with friend when I moved till this spring I hope then it will come home.

cichlidtank - I am just going off my experience and what I've read, but maybe yours will be fine. Perhaps if the other fish are on the aggressive side it will work.

gurlgotkat2000 - I have seen my Bluegill pick at plants, but not my Greens. Whether or not it eats them or will dig them up, I don't know yet.
