State of chaos
Following up my Clove Lake trip with my Dad I went to the local saltwater pier with my Grandpa to target one of my favorite species, Bluefish. Cocktail sized ones, but they can bend the rod and are a challenge to catch on lures. So I notice a school of about 40 fih under the pier. They ignored the spoon...actually avoided it...and eventually I came to the conclusion that they were

White Mullet. Mullet! I've always wanted to catch Mullet. They wouldn't eat pieces of my bagel so I thought how to get them while making half casts with the spoon. Then 2 idiots appear with a cast net, net the whole school, throw them in an empty bucket and keep going. Some guy came over and told them they cant and the guys with the net started cursing the guy out. They finished the rant with "You want to call the DEC?" They guy said "Yeah, I will!" They never showed up. They crowded MY spot and scared away the fish for a while. A half hour later they went through the bucket. They found a Shad. So they decide they only want Mullet so they throw the dead body of the Shad back into the ocean. They actually said "could you move over? I'm trying to get a shot." Not rudely but I was there first! So I started moving back towards them, making wild casts with my spoon and they left. Some kid comes up to me. He fishes too. We started talking and evenually we were taking turns with a snapper popper, having a great time watching the fish hit the tube trailing from the float like topwater strike. then someone makes a rod reel cast with a cast net tied to the line and somehow entangles a Cocktail. My friend went over and complained. "Thats not fishing." In the end I caught 15 fish, most on the popping float and a few on Silversides/Spoons, but I was mad at the netting incedents.

i love snapper blue fishing myself......Reminds of being a kid!!!! I use a light tackle rod and a metal spoon and its sooo much fun....its even more fun Surf fishin with a light tackle and catching a tad bigger ones...

the pier is bout 10 ft higher than the surface so the hardest part is keeping the Cocktail Bluefish under water until you swimg it over or they shake their head and throw the hook. but my friend got my red/white daredevle spoon snagged on a rock and I lost a pink Roostertail Spinner. The roostertail is one of 2 I have another...but I lost it on the cast after they took interest in it. in fact it got hit HARD.

anyone else think what they did was wrong?
BTW the 2 biggest fish of the day: one came on the Late Great red/white faded daredevle and on the tube. So are the cast net incedents as wrong as I think?

yea, the guys sound like jerks, should have called the authorities if what they were doing was illegal, if they were being polite then it'd be another story but there are enough *******s in the world.

well they were kinda crowding me and scaring away fish that were directly under me, not just Mullet but also the small Bluefish I was targeting.

Welcome to the world of pier fishing....err I usually call it combat fishing. However what they did was perfectly legal and throwing a shad over is not that big of a deal.

there is a fishing peir in boston where if the fishermen catch a skate, they keep it out on the dock and let little kids stomp on it and then they throw it on to the rocks to die b/c they dont want to catch the same fish twice:irked:

im prepared for that to happen. ill just say "I want it." then I'll take it and walk away then just throw it back. in fla they get alot of stingrays, ladyfish, and sea catfish and they do that.

I find that disgusting and total disregard for life. I go fishing and eat fish so not PETA follower but to kill like that for sake of killing is disgusting.

Months ago I was fishing by the beach and some elderly guy caught 2 brown baby sharks within the hour .
I don't know much about sharks not sure what type.

He cut them open through belly and threw them back in water .
