I'ma rain on your parade :)

I spoke to the person ordering fish for Petsmart awhileback, and from what he told me is that they have no say in the ordering and that the fish are ordered by Corporate office, and distributed to the stores. That's why they couldn't get good stock! Maybe apply for the position for the "CFIM" (Corporate Fish Inventory Manager), start from there, and make twice as much money!

I work at petsmart  i've been there for almost three years, i get customers who come in all the time convinced that oscars are the most aggressive cichlid ever  Whenever i yell them my cichlid sthey give me very strange looks as if the word motaguense is some strange word froma langauge on mars.
 I know what you're talking about.
They also think all fish grow to the size of the tank.

Ps PETsMART took away the "Oppurtunity Buys" from the stores because not enough stores took advantage of it, and they never ran out of them, and they died at the fishery.
They also got rid of the assorted livebearers and filled the tanks with mass quanities of certain specified ones cause they didn't sell enough assorted.
I hope they bring back the OB's though, I loved the plecos, pikes and eels they used to get it.
Even though I doubt I'll go back after getting wholesale prices now...w00t! :woot:

Please don't be to hard on people who mispronounce the names, I mispronounce everything, mainly because I have never heard it said, just seen it in print.

I'm just whining, lol, I heard to clerks in a petco arguing about how to say cichlid, was it SEEKLID or SICKLID, I told them it was KITCHLID :D

Ah....I worked at PetsMart for almost two years. The stories vary from Oh God, I Must Kill This Customer, to I Am Running Out of Places to Hide the Bodies. Admittedly, there were some nice people.

And I will admit this; when I first started at PetsMart, I had no interest in fish. I was to work with reptiles only, said the manager, since that was my area of expertise. That didn't last long...and I was then "trained" in the PetsMart style of fishkeeping. I did everything by the book for several months...and then one day, I decided to look online to see what else ropefish could eat (the PetsMart sticky said live and frozen only, but live and frozen WHAT?)...and found Aquahobby.com. Ever since that day, I did all I could to take down the system from within. Not that I didn't still have to sell the dumb people an oscar for their 10 gallon office tank (to take care of all the fry), or pacus for betta bowls, but I fought as hard as I could, and usually the customer would have to ask to speak to a manager before I caved.

dude i know where you are coming from have you read the caresheets for south american cichlids and africans they look strangely alike, plus theyare horriible care sheets anyway. i actually made a compatibility chartand pics and leave them at work so that associates and customers have some kind of a map to go by.

Yeah, Petcos in my area mean one thing: the 'fish house of death'. Even when I do see amazing deals, I usually won't even bother because everything I getr ther is in such bad condition they are unfixable. And I work at an LFS, so I've seen more than my fair share of morons. Worst one (I'm still seething over this), is this guy who came in practically everyday, didn't speak english that well, and asked what he could buy for his 29. I let him get a parrot, a clown loach, and a ghoast knife because he wanted EVERYTHING! After that, he would come in and ask what I would sell him--I would literally have to say "No!" when he asked for aros, oscars, pacus, etc. So a month later, he comes in with 6 5gal buckets filled with fish, saying 'he's moving to vietnam' and had to take down his 29. He had: 1 22" silver arowana, 1 8" oscar, a 4" pacu, 2 5" parrots, 3 large clown loaches, a lima shovelnose (about 8") and an altamira pike. All these he had in his 29!!?!?!? apparently, he would come in on days when I wasn't working, or send his friend, to get the fish I wouldn't sell him! This pisssed me off so much I almost took this guy outside.

I had a guy try to tell me Discus were Brackish..

I just gave him a courtesy laugh and agreed with him.. Right after he told me the story about his Archer fish laying eggs.

I saw some AMAZING things working at PetSmart..

Hey, X-Aqua is going retail, I am going to start a thread about WHAT A RETAIL STORE SHOULD BE! I would love all MFK'ers to join in, stay-tuned!
