Thoughts about private school

Yeah, we're pretty much broke, too. We've had to give up a lot to keep our classes small - we used to have a P.E. and music program and 5 assistants. Now we have to teach our own P.E., no music, and only two assistants. We're still a lot better off than most public schools though, our K has 13 or 14 students, 1st-4th grades average 20 kids per class and 5th-8th averages 26 or 27 kids per class. We have had to make a lot of tough decisions over the ten years I've been teaching, but we are doing the most we can with what we've got. It helps that all the teachers try hard for grants and we know how to beg - I managed to get $1400+ worth of aquarium equipment donated for the classroom tank I'm setting up. :headbang2
 
I went to a Private School the majority of my young life. My parents didn't really care for the religious aspect of the school (which most private schools are based on). The main reason that my parents sent me to a Private school was the fact that they believed it was a safer environment compared to Public school. It really depends on the schools. The private school I went to was supposedly one of the top ranked private schools in LA (not sure of that). I found myself having a harder time in Public school than Private school. It actually seemed that Public school was more fast pace. Spanish was an abomination. I was learning Spanish from a British lady in Private school. I ended up transferring to a Public school that year and while my Private school was still teaching us to memorize words, Public school was already conjugating sentences...it was kind of late for me so I didn't do well at all, lol! Seeing the difference of both, I will say that I did feel safer in Private school than Public school. My first day of Public school, I was sitting outside of my next class when I saw a fight break out on the other side of the fence. My second day, I was heard someone yell racist slurs (not sure if it was directed towards me) against Asians.

We had a religion class every semester. They were generally really easy and no one took them too seriously. Oh and we had mass once a month.

Honestly, a lot of it was about morals, I don't think I really learned or can remember anything about the history of Catholicism. The only thing I can remember from religion classes was art projects that seemed completely pointless, but were awesome. It was always one of those classes that a movie seemed to be played every week, except for my last year, which was more of a dealing with the real world class more than a religion class.

Wow, I went to private (religious) school from k - 8th grade, it is one of the worst experiences of my entire life. I was taught and told that I was going to hell for the tv shows I liked to watch. Punished and verbally abused on a daily basis. Punished for not knowing more about the bible or not agreeing with their viewpoints. I truly hate private schools and religion. I would never reccomed d private school to anyone, it will scar you, especially young kids

My parents felt the same way. When I lived in southern CA, I went to public school (K thru 8th) then went to a private high school. There was a definite difference in environment. The public high schools in my area were bad. Not really commenting on the teachers but the students. The nearest high school always had at least two cop cars parked in front. Then once in a while, around ten cop cars and an ambulance would be sitting outside.

That's what all my friends that went to the elementary school connected to the high school said. They all claimed it was an awful experience, but our high school I guess was more laid back so they didn't hate it as much.....

I went to both private and public schools growing up. I think a kid can do very well in either system, it really depends on their personality, interests, and the schools in your area. Some public schools are great, some obviously are not. One of the great downfalls of public education in this country is that schools in low income, high crime areas tend to be much worse.
I also should point out I don't have kids, so I'll just put down some considerations I think would be helpful coming from someone who has experienced them.
Ask yourself why you are considering private school. Is religion something important to your family that you'd like as part of your child's education? Perhaps more relevant, is it important to them? Do they have any learning issues that would be benefitted by the smaller class sizes in private schools? Is sports important to them? We didn't even have football at one of my high schools. Do they know if they want to go to college or a trade school or...? The list really goes on and on.
