Thoughts on stocking?

You could do a variety of African cichlids or central american cihlids on higher ph waters, something I've been learning over the past couple months. There are many types of synodontis that look very similar to pictus. They come in a wide range of sizes too though, so check out what might be available through your lfs, then what size they get. If you plan to go the RO DI route, you usually mix it in proportion with your tap water to dilute the high ph, rather than use all Ro and try to add back minerals. But then you need to be adding the same proportion at every wc so theres no swings in ph. The other methods such as driftwood and almond leaves etc have been widely reported as inneffective on other threads here.

That’s my vote, but there’s not many you could do in the 29, maybe some shellies or caudopuntatus and possibly a small type of synodontis. That 150 could be an amazing Malawi tank though.
Are there any other fish aside from synodontis that can live an African cichlid tank?

Depends who you ask, I’ve seen some other fish such as loaches and SA/CA cichlids with Malawi cichlids , but I don’t support that. I tried years ago with some luck, but it was very short term. The only fish I would recommend with rifties are BN plecos and synos

Is caring for Malawi cichlids any different from lake tanganyika and Victoria cichlids? I don’t hear as much about people keeping them than Malawi cichlids

My experience with tangs is limited, but the only difference I found with the 3 lakes is stocking levels. But depending on the specific fish, Vics sometimes do well with malawis

Speaking very generally, with Malawis, it’s usually best to over stock, not so much with tangs and that sometimes works with Vics . But there’s a lot of variables. Are you talking about the 150 or 29?
I was thinking of maybe after I set up the pictus/angel tank i could set up 100-125 gallon tank for African cichlids
