i can think of some....
actually many...
but many of them the information in my heads kinda blurry...
heres some...
pikeheads,jade gobies,dwarf channa(illegal?),lima shovelnose,pictus catfish,chaca chaca(avoid these...),some other small catfish that i cant remember,clown loaches(get to a foot but grow SLOW),pike livebearers,hujeta gars,pike characins,hydrolycus scomberoides(can be a pain to keep alive)...
cant think of any more...
but will update as i remember.:D
most of these get to around a foot or less in captivity.

not sure about the plants.
i had barebottom with mine.
but i dont think the b.bagarius would mind as long as theres open room with current.
they dont move much anyway.

Avoid Chaca Chaca?
I was interested in them but I figured they wouldnt mix with either a senegalus or a bagarius....
and unfortunately channa are illegal

they tend to lower the ph of the tank using body secretions or something...
stressful for other fish.

For more surface fish try chalceus or african butterfly. They're pretty cool. I personally wouldn't keep a chal in smaller than a 5' tank but since yours is you should be good. Cool fish and not as predatory as the payara etc...will work with the mini-monsters you're thinking about. I would go planted, and I like the ctenopoma idea too.

Thats a great idea, I was actually thinking about an African Butterfly today...
I have started to plant out my tank got a couple huge swords and some hornwort and javafern, so Ill see how that works out. Tank is stocked with driftwood, and I impulsively brought home a ctenopoma. I know a good amount about them as Ive kept them in stores, just never had the opportunity to keep one at home because of my recently lost beasts.
Are chalceus schooling or will they do OK alone? I dont want to overstock but I would like some movement in my tank, and the more unusual the better.
Also, I am in need of a good catfish that will help sift through the gravel.
Also thinking maybe a climbing perch?
Thoughts?

Thanks
