Eventually the chances are you'll get two people just yelling insults back at each other like children and I'm not excluding myself from that.

Firstly, may I say that I don't want a bloody argument. This is my opinion and if people don't like it they can jump in a puddle.
I've had a few people in their 40's and 50's tell me that my generation and below are the worst. Apparently we're rude, selfish, arrogant, ignorant, lazy and almost every negative word you can think of.
My usual response to these people is "maybe so, but didn't your generation raise ours? Where did your generation mess up so bad that you've created a generation of snowflakes?"
There are and have always been people who wanted to make change, for the better or worse. Had the internet been around in the 40's-50's I think we would have encountered the problem a lot sooner.
You've said it yourself S skjl47 , people were getting soft on their kids long before now. Its just gotten worse as each generation still thinks they were hard done by.
Essentially, what I think happened is social media.
Once social media got big all the SJW's (whether they were after the sexists, racists, phobics, or whatever) had a platform. And even though its only a very small number my gosh they make a very big noise.. And if someone's using a jackhammer outside your bedroom window, usually you just want to shut them up.. Same for the mods here as well as the politicians and anyone else, they just want to stop the jackhammer.

Every generation has had the newer generation coming up weather it be hippies of the sixties and seventies or what was dubbed the counter culture in the eighties and nineties.
Social media has definitely given everyone a voice. So it’s a lot easier for these people of different opinions and backgrounds to mingle and sometimes clash.
What we all need to remember is just because someone doesn’t agree with you it’s not personal challenge for to force them to believe like you do.
