Tig not eating

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Any tank mates that could also bothering the tig? My tigrinus (atleast), is bothered by any slight change in the tank. Adding a powerhead, airstones, tankmates such as clown loaches, geos, even a pleco. When that happens, it doesn't want to eat.

You might also want to consider this possibility.

Nobody is bugging him

Small tigrinus are dumb, for lack of a better word. They do better in smaller tanks where its easier to find food. Your fish might not be bugging him, but I'm sure sharing a tank with fish like that stresses him out. I'd set up a divider or basket for a few weeks until the tig establishes himself before releasing him into gen pop.

Interesting on the beef heart, guys, thanks, albeit, I've never given it to any of my fish, neither do I like giving them anything that is that foreign to them.

Agree with the above. Many keepers put their little tigs alone and in a small tank. I'd not think this is necessary, or necessary for most tigs, but I've noticed this is what people do to get them to eat what they want them to eat easier and sooner rather then harder and later.

Yea that's what I've noticed with my little guy. You literally have to put the food right in from of him and it still takes a second to notice. Also since I added a tree stump for him to hide under he seems to be comepletely comfortable and ready to eat whenever I put the food in his face.

This is good advice. I've grown a 3" Tig to 22", fed fish, then sinking carnivore, then massivore. It used to hang on the front right corner of the tank, just dropped them down in front of him, snap them up. Isolate him, so it can focus on just eating. Then you can reestablish in a community later. My 2cents.

Still hasnt eatten :(

Got him on the 1st so today is day 10
Had it been fed live foods before you got it?

I'd also make sure nothing else is funny, water parameters, oxygen, etc.

I've always had these issues with young tigs. I agree with both posts from above.
It's best to keep them isolated in their own grow out tanks for now. I kept my young tigs in a 40 gal breeder or 60 gal until they push to close to 12".

Even after that, when I moved them to a 135 gal, I'd still have to provide hiding spots, provide less light and make sure tankmates are suitable.

IME with my tigs, they go for beefheart almost immediately. Not sure if you'd like to do that.

Beefheart didnt work.......i dont have any space tanks but i was thinking of putting a plastic clothes basket or drilled rubbermaid tote and putting him in it to make him feel more secure....

At 8 inches how long could he go without food?
