Tig not eating

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I (and many others) make tank dividers out of egg crate light diffuser sold by Lowe's, Home Depot, etc. in 2'x4' sheets.

It can fast 1-2 months easy, starting from healthy condition.

You could try live black worms or nightcrawlers too... but I've never had a tig (I've had 7) that didn't cave and take fish pieces within a week or two.

If it's longer than that, I'd become concerned that something else might be bothering it.

Light difuser is what i normally would use but im afraid to use it on the acrylic tank he is in... dont want to scratch it

I dont get why hes not eatting either....ive tried everything and the tank perams, temp, flow, aeration is on point.....

Wont take tilapia, silversides, carnivore or massivore pellets, night crawlers, beef heart, i tried soaking everythibg in garlic guard and vitachem as well.

Ive been using a tong and placing all foods in front of him

I havent tried black worms but for hiw small they are i think they wouod just get sucked up into the sump even if i tried putting them in front of his face

Should i treat with prazi?

Did you turn all of the lights off? If you haven't, try it as well for a few days.
When my tigs lose appetite, it's usually a week or so.

Also, when this happens, I'd start quarantining live feeders. I also usually buy live feeders from a fresh batch(new shipment) from my lfs. Then I'd offer a couple of those to the tig.

If it eats, then I'll know it's just not accepting what I previously fed it and the tig is healthy enough to catch and eat the feeder. After this, I'd start to try to wean it off live food.

Yea lights have been off for a week.....feeders are hard since there are 3 small armatus in the tank that i finally got off live :(

As much as I like them I have just about given up on tigs as all of mine have just up and stopped eating at some point before eventually dying.
Have you tried appropriately sized earthworms or nightcrawlers? My tigs loved them and the flash zebra that I have now snaps them up with gusto.

SandNukka said he had tried night crawlers.

That sounds terrible, Krich. It shouldn't be this way. Do you have any ideas why?

There are a few fish I can't raise either, like firewood catfish and IDK why at all. Just clueless.

If it was fed feeder fish before you got it, then this may be more or less understandable. I'd keep offering cut fish. The tig should be ok even after a month passes.

If worried and as Ceejaye suggests, one can test a tig and at the same time give it a break by offering a feeder or two (after you have divided it off).

Prazi may be a good idea. It works 1000x better through food but it does work through long term bath too. I'd ask the seller if the tig was treated against internal parasites though, before treating the tank.

The tig was purchased from monster aquarium....i dont think they teeat their fish...he has a high turnover rate

It's your call.

IMHO, any reputable vendor should know if they treated their fish or if it came treated and how it had been treated before they got it.

8" tig is not a normal selling size. Someone has kept it a while.

I suspect if you go feeders the tig won't even have a chance to decide if it wants to eat them or not as the armies will take them out....regardless if they have been eating other foods. You could try dropping in a few feeders after the lights have been off and the room is dark. That way the tig would be the only fish that could hunt them down.
