I was given 3 tiger barbs and decided to try them as dithers in my 210 that is stocked with Oscars, Severums, JD, Cuban, Cons, red points, pike, tinfoil barbs, and frontosas. I only gave it a shot because my fish have never shown interest in smaller fish or feeders. I am happy to report that it seems to be working. No one cares about them and they are swimming happily. Has anyone had success with Tiger Barbs as dithers like this before?

I'm curious, are your cichlids on the small side? JD, Cuban, pike etc... I would have thought they would have been eaten by now? What size are the Tiger Barbs? It seems like its working. Good luck. :grinno:

Oscars are 14 inches and 10 inches. JD is 10 inches. The pike is only 4 inches and the cuban is only 3 inches so who knows about the future. The tiger barbs are between 2 and 3 inches. I thought there was a chance they might get eaten, but then again my fish have never been interested in feeders unless they are goldfish. I just figured that they were headed to the toilet if I didn't take them, so at least I gave them a chance. So far so good. This is some of the fish they are with.

If it works great! Good looking Oscar and JD by the way. How big are your Tinfoil Barbs? I have 3 about 5 inches and growing very quickly.

I am at 4 of the original 8 tiger barbs, but my mistake was getting them a bit too small. Once they are 2 inches or so it should be fine. They just didnt have enough speed before. They were in the tank with a small GT and red tail shark, who were also rather smalls, 2 inches, but the barbs were under an inch, a couple probably just over half inch.

My tinfoils are about 4-5 inches. If this keeps working I my bump the tigers up to 8-10. It would make a great active contrast compared to the big slower moving cichlids. Oh and thanks for the compliment on my fish.

When I got tired of my tiger barbs, I fed them to my oscar...lol They will be food soon.

Hope it works, depends on the fish I suppose. If it does work I'd get some more TB's and some GDanios, really liven things up.

They have made it through 3-4 days now...still alive. I am going to give it a couple of weeks. If it works, more tigers!
