Tiger Barbs as dithers!

So would 3+" Tiger Barbs be conisdered big enough??? I have had these little guys for more than 6 months now and dont really wanna lose them as I got them when they were less than an inch. Everytime my hand goes in their tank they are circling my arm biting me. I think they act just like little zippy cichlids.

Answering that question would only be speculation. You don't know until you try. If they're that important, don't risk it.

That's pretty cool that they don't touch the little fish, but I wonder for how long.

balton, yeah, I didnt know what your fish was but an oscar is a bit slower I than a managuese. I wouldnt recommend them for something like that. How big was your jaguar at the time? I used to have one that was around 6" craziest fish I have ever had lol.

scubasteve, if you were gonna try the tigers in that 90 gallon you have listed, I would worry about the red devil later. I dont know much about the synodontis...catfish type? But the barbs I have get kinda picked on in the dusk by the red tail shark, when they are sleeping, seems they dont move away or hide like the cichlids do at night.

Yea I used to have red tail shark that beat the crap outta everything in my communtiy tank 4". I gave him to someone with a 46. Yea the syno is a feather fin catfish. I think I'll leave them in my community. I got a kribenis and a pink convict from my g/f for valentines day. I like the colors on the Krib, I really dont like the pink convict (she got it for me cuz it was pink, valentines day, she knows I have cichlids etc..), anyways he's starting to grow on me. He's held his own against every other cichlid in their so far and scared them all away, little a**hole lol.

My Oscars have been with 2-3 inch fish their whole life and never touched them. I think it is going to work.

The big problem with tigers (and I've used them successfully at times) is that they are very vulnerable at night. They go into that "head down" sleep mode and a stealthy fish can just idle up and take them down. I was fine with them until I got a gt that decided they looked like popcorn and ate a couple every night. I currently have a juvi sal (maybe 3") that kills stuff for fun; the only thing I can have in there is giant danios, and she's killed 5-6 of those so far. She took out 2 tigers early on, and went through 8 rosy barbs in a single night! So, as with anything, it depends on the individual fish involved.

I think its possible if the oscars have been with the small fish since they were small as well, got my Oscar and GT at the same time at almost the same size, Oscar is now twice the GT's size but leaves him alone. But if I try to put barbs or any other smallish fish in there they are gone by morning.

I have three tiger barbs around 7 cm with a male GT and con in 200 lts. I added these at the same time with the cichlids. But others that I added later are all hunted down. 5 of them are killed by the GT and synspilum. Several ones are killed in the first 5 minutes. Sometimes I see bite marks on the flanks of the remaining 3 barbs. I think the GT catches them, but since they are too big or him to devour completely, he doesnt know what to do with them, he lets them go. Thats how I analyze the teeth marks on them :) I dont think they will last forever. But the key point is never add them after the tank is established.

I just added three more. A shoal of six looks really cool. So far no problems. My big fish don't even notice them. I hope my luck continues.
