I have NEVER seen a fish die from HITH in fact - If it goes unchecked, the whole face area gets wasted away. When TAKEN CARE OF PROPERLY, it will remain slight spotting, as in this photo and not affect the fish's health.
Even though it may be rare to see an adult oscar without HITH, IMO it still means the fish isn't taken care of properly because I believe this disease is directly linked to water quality and nutrition. When my oscar started getting HITH I freaked out and doubled up on water changes and bought a variety of high quality foods for her, didn't even get a chance to buy supplements and she healed up in 2 weeks thankfully with no scars at all. Take care of all these beautiful oscars everyone!
