I got news for you Tikarmann, I do have a tig so you can sit back and keep listening. 36'' is an exceptionally large specimen and its unlikely they'll reach that size in captivity...I'll give you that. However, 20-24'' isn't unheard of, so what's the difference? You say all tigs are on their way to the freezer between 9 and 10 inches. You're obsessed with the "hump" on a tig which makes no sense what so ever and you refuse to listen to anyone. Then you come up with this wild story about tigrinus being tube bred with hormones, despite the fact that everyone tells you they're wild-caught. You've been told by more than one importer the facts and yet you act as if no one can hear or understand you. I don't have a problem with you, I just feel like you need to listen to the people with experience(and I'm not talking about me).

everyone knows that tigs get to 24-30inch but you said 36inch were you got that from i dont know but like you said you know several people who have them so lets see them

i have never said anything about what size tigs die at just that they do well for 4-6months then die

were are the pics of your tig lets see them as like i said you must be doing something right that we dont know about

the captive breeding idear came from a mag we have hear in the UK ptactical fishkeeping if i was allowed to scan and post the artical i would but i have asked the mag and they wont allow it
but 2-3 other guys from the UK have also said they have read the artical

anyway were are your tig pics ? how long have you had the fish for ? and what size is it?

This is my first Tig (actually first F/W fish!!) I've always kep saltwater species. I didn't know they were prone to unexplained deths when I spent $300 on him or I would have thought twice!! I sure hope this guy lives a long life because I really enjoy him alot! Here is his tank, he is the only fish in it and I don't think I'll put anything else with him.

Here is my Tig, sorry it's not the best pic but it's the best I can do. I sure hope they don't get over 24" in captivity!!!! I'm in real trouble if they do. Everything I had been told was to expect 18-22" up to 24" max?? I think mine is around 6" right now.

you may be lucky but i dont know may people who have grown them bigger than 20inch

the tank looks cool by the way

Hey, I never claimed I had a large tig, but I don't have to. Just like I don't have to jump off a cliff to know I'll die...

I don't have any pics of my tig just like I don't have any pics of my other fish, but mine's around 8'' or so and I've had him since July. So far so good. However, if he croaks I'm not going to blame it on a hump or hormones. Tigs have only been in captivity for a short while and we have alot to learn about them. I don't know several people "personally" with large tigs, but I met people at the ACA convention and on the boards that have large ones around 2 ft. and up. Do I have pics? No. That's not the point. This discussion has nothing to do with the adult size of a tigrinus. So "everyone knows" tigs get 24-30 inches? What's the largest one ever caught in the wild? I'll get back to you on that. I may have overshot adult size a bit but that's irrelevant. The fact is tigs can and are grown up in captivity to large sizes without dying.

so you are a tig big shot after only keeping one for less than 3 months

i have had 4 tigs in 2 yrs and the one i know for sure that was wild caught (from peir aqautics) is still going strong

when you have had your tig for more than 1yr then i think you will know what you are talking about if its still alive

ive been told that some tigs are also captive bread and brought into breeding condition useing hormone injections. this is by a couple of people i know and trust not to bull s**t me.

if you can cross breed a rtc with a tsn then why wouldent you use the same methord to breed expencive fish like tigs? you know what these arse holes are like when it comes to makeing money.

before anyone asks i dont have a tig and carnt afford one its just my 2$ worth.

ps, the largest tig ive ever seen in the flesh was 16" and it had just been shipped in from the wild.

I better stop reading this thread, you guys are giving me an ulcer :swear: If my Tig goes belly up on me I am just going to be sick. I've seen pics on the net at scotfish.com of 2 footers in captivity and somewhere else too. I thought there was an old thread here that showed big Tigs in tanks???

LOL, sorry mate. im not saying i expect all tigs to die. ive seen lots of big tigs my self on the net. one lad ( catfish guy i think) had a tank full last time looked all at very good sizes.

we just had a very large boom over here not to long ago and the price of tigs was slashed and they were every were. every one i know who went straight out and bought these cheap tigs all lost them.

Have you ever considered that there was a "bad batch"? That does happen from time to time. That doesn't mean they're tampered with genetically.
