Tips and advice on first rays

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Don't go with relics even tho they stay small and are very common. Most reticulated rays are very unhealthy. If you can find one that's been in captivity for a while and is eating I'd say go for it seeing you can keep a pair of retics in a 180. But most of the time when you see retics in a pet store there in bad shape. A good thing to look for when buying rays is look at the base of there disk where there tale is if it's fat it's healthy if you can see its hips (looks like two bones sticking up) walk away. Rays are awsome if you can house them correctly but as alot of people on here say you do need a big tank. Motor's can get up to a 30" disk

You're telling me rays that are imported from South America are less than $100? I'm sure they must be well treated to fetch such a price.

not gonna lie... motoros are pretty cheap compared to what they used to be... even china imports them pretty cheap.. so around 100$ or less wouldnt be too far off... just saying.

That's my point. Imagine your incentive to properly treat a fish that has all the demands of a ray when it only brings in baby bucks. Imagine how much incentive the shipper has to properly bag and package these fish and so on to the fisherman. I think motoro would be much more appreciated if they weren't as available, but the poor treatment they receive prior to hitting my tank distorts my view of them. That's how I imagine it anyway, I've kept zero motoros let alone a wc pup.

lol not gonna lie, they all go into a holding tank to a box. no matter what wild. it all depends on size of box and fish. so not much diferent... ive gotten things shipped from SA and got good and bad... but there is not much difference.

I got 2 retics from random stores, one starting in my 75 and then the second when I got a 180. I knew a fraction of what I know now. In retrospect I would advise me 4 years ago not to get the retics and put it in a 75 gallon either, and that actually makes me regret ever telling people not to do things. Maybe I got lucky, one thing that is not a maybe is that I learned a lot along the way, I was lucky enough to have the means to upgrade though. Still though, makes me think if my girlfriend never spotted (and wanted) the first "teacup" we ever saw in the local stores, and I didn't put him in the 75 where he legit had fair room for almost a year, things may have been different now. Or maybe not lol.

That being said, I felt the lesson would probably be a lot different if I got motoros instead. I feel like that would have gotten out of hand way too quick lol, I wouldn't have been able to keep up at all is my bet.

A few years ago I had a tank full of fish (in a 4'x2'x2' coincidentally) when I was living in an apartment. Went out and bought a 7'×2'×2' for an upgrade. In a matter of three months after buying that tank my life took an unsuspecting turn, and long story short, ended up selling the 210 and some pretty hard to come by fish without ever getting to set up the 210. That's taught me to slow down a bit, because things don't always work out how I plan it. Hence my first comment earlier of slow and steady wins the race.

I'm getting my motoros from Peru (apparently), and including shipping it's only $200 per ray, so that seemed legitimately priced for what I'm getting. And so far all that I can tell is that I need a bigger tank, especially when they grow out. What's the growth rate for motoros, obviously, they will have enou room for a while in the 125, but how much do they grow a month would you guys say?

Expect 8x4 for motoro. We advise hystrix and mini because s 3' width will work. It's harder to come by big tanks than rays. Getting the tank and then the rays is obviously safer.

Btw everyone, a 8x3x2 only comes out to 360 completely full, so minus not being full and water displacement of sand and anything else, and then including filtration capacity, it's really only 350 gallons. That's really not the 500 gal pond of a tank I thought it was, that's build able for sure. I've read a few build stories and all seem to have a short lifetime. Build or buy?

And is there any catfish that go well with stingrays? I would like something to clean up extra food and add a little more awe to the tank. TSN has been sold to a local keeper with a 375 gal tank just some everyone knows.
